Discover Amboise
Accommodation in Amboise
When looking for a hotel in Amboise, you can choose your destination based on your interests in Renaissance history, Leonardo da Vinci, museums, nature or regional produce. The town brings together a range of points of interest: a royal residence, a home where Leonardo spent the last years of his life, a museum in a private mansion, a designated nature area, a narrated tour and a market offering regional products.
Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci
The Château Royal d’Amboise is the first royal residence of the French Renaissance. Its chapel contains Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb. The Château du Clos Lucé offers a different historical connection: it was Leonardo da Vinci’s home during the last three years of his life. The Domaine Royal de Château Gaillard, meanwhile, focuses on the Italian Renaissance. It is the first Italian Renaissance château in France and is set in a 15-hectare forest in the center of Amboise. These sites therefore represent different historical points of interest: a royal residence, the last years of Leonardo’s life and a château of the Italian Renaissance. This makes it possible to tailor your trip to whether you want to focus on royal history, Leonardo’s biography or Renaissance architecture.
Museum and town history
The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire d’Amboise is housed in a private mansion commissioned by Pierre Morin in the early 16th century. The museum’s location therefore also has a specific historical and architectural connection. In 2002, the museum received the designation “Musée de France.” The history of the building and its later institutional designation are two distinct aspects that may be relevant if you are interested in Amboise’s culture.
Nature on Île d’Or
Île d’Or in Amboise is designated as a natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest (ZNIEFF). Loire birds such as terns, herons and great egrets can be observed along its banks. Such sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. If you are interested in birds, you can take their seasonal nature into account when planning, rather than treating individual sightings as a fixed part of your itinerary. This makes Île d’Or a different focus from the residences and museum.
Train tour and market visit
The Petit Train d’Amboise offers a 40-minute narrated tour through the historic town center, along the Loire and past the Renaissance châteaux. The route starts at Place Michel Debré, opposite the Château Royal d’Amboise. Its duration and starting point make the tour an independent, time-limited element to include in your plans. As operating details and departure times may vary by season, check the timetable before your trip.
The Marché d’Amboise takes place every Friday and Sunday morning. Local produce, regional specialties and wines are on offer; visitors can sample regional products and talk with local producers about their expertise. A visit to the market thus offers both regional products and the opportunity to speak with the people who make them. Confirm the market dates before your trip to ensure your planned visit fits your stay.
