Azay-sur-Indre brings together several different themes to consider when planning a trip: a church with Romanesque features and Gothic elements, historic buildings, and walking and cycling routes. If you are deciding which focus suits your stay, the architectural history, route details and conditions for visiting the mill can help guide you. This makes it easier to organise your plans around your cultural interests and preferred level of activity.

Romanesque and Gothic architecture

The Église Saint-Crépin-et-Saint-Crépinien is a rural church of Romanesque origin with a single-nave layout. Its Romanesque nave is connected to a Gothic choir; part of the Gothic roof structure is preserved above the choir. The building thus brings together different architectural forms. The wall paintings also show distinct phases of decoration: several successive decorative schemes survive on the interior and exterior walls. The oldest scheme, dating from the 13th century, includes a double-jointed imitation ashlar pattern. Above it are four superimposed funerary schemes dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Those interested in religious architecture will find several features to consider here: the single-nave layout, the connection between nave and choir, and the wall paintings from different periods.

Château de la Folaine and Bergeresse

The Château de la Folaine consists of two wings set at right angles to each other. A rectangular tower stands at their junction. The façades and roofs of the château are listed as historic monuments; the listing was made by decree dated 14 September 1949. For the Ancienne métairie monastique de Bergeresse, the decree of the same date applies to the courtyard entrance and the residential building. Its former chapel preserves traces of wall paintings. The information on the protected parts of these buildings therefore differs from the details about their architectural form or surviving traces of painted decoration. Together, they offer different ways of exploring the history of local buildings, although not all the statements refer to the same parts of the buildings.

The mill and visiting arrangements

The Moulin de la Follaine is in the hamlet of La Follaine, which is part of Azay-sur-Indre, and is first mentioned in documents from the 15th century. Visits are possible on Heritage Days or by appointment. Arrange any appointment-based visit before your trip. The mill’s first written mention dates from a different period than the monument listings for Château de la Folaine and Bergeresse, which are dated 14 September 1949.

Walks with different starting points

The walk “La vallée de l’Indrois” passes through Chédigny, Azay-sur-Indre and Chambourg-sur-Indre. Its main route is 13 kilometres long, with an 8-kilometre alternative. Two specific distances are therefore given for this walk. Another option is the “Randonnée d’Azay-sur-Indre à Chambourg-sur-Indre”, which can start in Azay-sur-Indre or Chambourg-sur-Indre. It runs between the valley and the plateau and is noted for its scenic and historical richness. The circular walk “La Fayette dans la vallée de l’Indre” can, in turn, start in Reignac-sur-Indre or Azay-sur-Indre. The starting points and route details help distinguish the walks: the Indrois walk offers a choice of two distances, while the other two walks each have two possible starting points.

A cycling route also leads to Azay-sur-Indre

The cycling loop “La rose dans la vallée – Boucle vélo n°3” passes through Azay-sur-Indre. This is where the Indre and Indrois rivers meet. This cycling route differs from the walks described: its named point of reference is the confluence in Azay-sur-Indre, whereas the walking routes are described in terms of distances, starting points or the route between valley and plateau.

When looking for a hotel in Azay-sur-Indre, you can first organise your planned outings and their starting points.
