Bournan – Hiking and Architectural History in the Touraine
Accommodation in Bournan
Bournan offers two hiking loops with clearly stated distances and striking historic buildings to help you plan your trip. The shorter loop leads through the Riolle valley up to the “Billaudières” viewpoint; alongside it is the 21.4-kilometre Grande boucle. Together with the Église Saint-Martin and the Château de Bagneux, these features give the town a character shaped equally by landscape and architectural history.
Hiking Loops and Viewpoint
The shorter Bournan loop is 14.5 kilometres long. Its route leads through the Riolle valley and up to the “Billaudières” viewpoint. The Grande boucle is 21.4 kilometres long. The 6.9-kilometre difference makes it easy to compare the route lengths: choose according to the distance you would like to cover. Both Bournan hiking routes start at the community hall in the town centre, where parking is available. Check the current parking situation before setting out, as practical conditions may change.
Église Saint-Martin: Construction Phases and Details
Different construction phases can be distinguished at the Église Saint-Martin. The masonry in the nave may date from the 10th century. The apse, both side apses, the transept and the square bell tower date from the 12th century; the entrance portal is attributed to the 15th century. The lower storey of the bell tower has three round arches on each side. The tower is flanked by a round stair turret and topped with an octagonal stone spire. The church has been classified as a historic monument since 19 September 1966. It also houses an octagonal baptismal font made of white limestone, with two carved stone masks.
Château de Bagneux and Refuge Tunnel
The Château de Bagneux was built on a limestone promontory and dates from the 13th to the 15th century. Its two surviving towers retain their machicolations. According to local tradition, the castle was connected to Loches or the Tour de Galles by means of fire signals. The château is privately owned and is not open to visitors. Its architecture can be viewed from the outside; check local visiting conditions before planning a visit.
Bournan’s refuge tunnel is another of the town’s distinctive historic features. Its network includes around 150 metres of galleries. A high central gallery resembles an underground quarry, while narrow passages are typical of refuge tunnels. These two distinct areas give the structure its own spatial character: the high gallery is followed by the characteristic narrow passages.
