Rivière: Nature, Wine and Heritage
Accommodation in Rivière
Rivière offers several specific ways to shape a stay: hiking trails through vineyards and truffle groves, wildlife watching along the Vienne, a cycling loop through Rivière and Chinon, and wine and cultural experiences. This allows you to assess Rivière based on which of these themes you want to define your stay.
Hiking among vineyards and valley views
The “Rivière N°1” route is an easy 10.2-kilometre hiking trail with 92 metres of elevation gain. It passes through vineyards and truffle groves and offers views of the valley. Its length, easy rating and elevation gain give you practical guidance when planning your day. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season; take this into account when planning.
The “Rivière N°2” route also passes through vineyards and truffle groves and offers several spectacular viewpoints over the valley. If valley views are a particular priority when choosing a route, these viewpoints are a useful reference for planning your hike.
Nature along the Vienne
Along the banks of the Vienne near Rivière, you can spot gulls, large gulls, little egrets, terns and herons. A backwater of the Vienne, locally also called a “boire”, is a favoured breeding ground for numerous fish species, including pike. It is also home to numerous dragonfly, amphibian and bird species. Birdwatching along the banks and the species found in the backwater offer different insights into the river’s natural environment.
Explore Rivière by bike
Cycling Loop No. 42 passes through Rivière and Chinon and crosses the landscape of the Vienne Valley. It therefore gives cyclists a distinct way to explore the region: the route takes in Rivière and Chinon, while the valley provides its landscape setting. If you would like to include cycling in your trip, you can consider this route as a separate focus alongside the hiking trails.
Vineyard, cellar and Chinon wines
At Château de Rivière, visitors can follow, observe and experience the seasonal and daily work in the vineyard and cellar. The focus is therefore on activities in two areas of winemaking: the vineyard and the cellar. This offers a different experience from a tasting, turning attention to the work behind the wine.
Domaine Brocourt welcomes visitors year-round at its shop in Rivière, where you can taste its full range of Chinon wines. The two wine experiences are therefore distinct: Château de Rivière focuses on work in the vineyard and cellar, while Domaine Brocourt offers tastings of its Chinon selection. Before travelling to the Domaine Brocourt shop, it is a good idea to confirm the current visitor arrangements.
Notre-Dame de Rivière Church
Notre-Dame de Rivière Church has a crypt and 16th-century tomb effigies. It also features recently restored 11th-century frescoes. The frescoes and tomb effigies thus date from different centuries; the crypt, visual art and funerary sculpture represent different aspects of the church. For travellers who want to take architecture and historical art into account when choosing where to visit, the church is a distinctive cultural attraction in Rivière.
