Discover Germigny-Des-Prés
Accommodation in Germigny-Des-Prés
Germigny-Des-Prés lies within the Val de Loire area designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town combines a Carolingian oratory with walking and cycling trails that vary in type and route.
Carolingian Oratory and Mosaic
Théodulphe had an oratory built in Germigny-Des-Prés in 806. It is one of the few surviving buildings from the Carolingian period in France and is considered one of the country’s oldest churches. The oratory also preserves France’s only surviving Carolingian mosaic. Here, the building’s historical significance and its visual art come together.
The mosaic depicts the Ark of the Covenant, above which two cherubim are shown. Two archangels frame the scene, with the hand of God appearing between them. These details provide a specific focus for your visit: alongside the age of the oratory, you can look at the figures depicted and how they are arranged. The oratory is open daily for free, self-guided visits. As opening information may change, check the details before you travel.
Garden and Exhibition
A death lantern dating to the 9th century stands in the garden next to the oratory. The Grange Germignonne houses the tourist office’s exhibition room, with explanations and objects from the oratory; the exhibition also includes mosaic fragments. If you are visiting for a particular exhibit, check in advance what is on display, as the contents may change. In this way, a historic object in the garden and the exhibition associated with the oratory complement a visit to the building in different ways.
Walking and Cycling
The Sentier du Grand Clair is a circular route around the town center. Along the way, it passes the oratory garden and follows the Bonnée. The route thus connects three clearly identified points: the town center, the garden, and the river.
The PR des Verdiaux – A14 walking loop is 16 kilometers long. Its stated duration is 4 hours and 30 minutes; the route listing records an update dated June 15, 2026. It starts at the Carolingian oratory on Place de l'Église, where there is also a parking lot. The trail follows the GR 3 as far as the Loire levee. After reaching the levee, the route continues to the Loire à Vélo.
For cyclists, the 15-kilometer “Entre histoire carolingienne et histoire romaine” cycling loop is another option. It runs between Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire and Germigny-Des-Prés. The routes differ in activity type and geographical scope: there is a loop around the town center, a walking loop with a stated distance and duration, and a cycling loop between two towns. You can plan your trip around the type of route you prefer.
A secure bicycle locker is available near the oratory; you can get the access code from the tourist office. If you plan to use the locker, confirm the access information with them in advance.
