Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc: Loire, Roses and History
Accommodation in Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc
Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc combines a clear connection to the Loire with garden culture, cycling and historic sites. The commune borders the Loire and is located in the heart of the Val de Loire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Depending on your travel interests, different aspects of the place come to the fore: its geographical location, the La Loire à Vélo route, a rose garden or the commune's history.
The Loire and the cycling route
The Loire and the cycling route are two distinct points of reference for understanding the commune. The Loire borders Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc; the La Loire à Vélo route passes through the commune. The first describes the commune's location by the river, while the second relates to cycling. If you are interested in a cycling trip, the route is therefore a concrete part of the local landscape. The connection with the Val de Loire adds the region's UNESCO World Heritage status to this perspective.
Rose garden and château
The Jardin de Roses du Château is located in the château park and is laid out around an old greenhouse adjoining a building. The garden covers 1,100 m² and has 400 rose bushes in 65 varieties. Its area, number of plants and range of varieties give you different points of reference if you are making the rose garden a focus of your trip.
The commune's history of roses extends beyond this garden. As early as 1910, extensive rose nurseries operated by the Grandes Roseraies du Val de Loire were located on Rue des Anguignis. In 2017, the Jardin de Roses du Château was included in the Route de la Rose des Départements tourist trail. These details refer to different times and places: the former rose nurseries on Rue des Anguignis and the garden's later inclusion in a tourist trail. The château hosts art exhibitions throughout the year on three floors, offering another cultural point of interest in Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc.
Historic sites and astronomy
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the town's oldest monument. King Henri IV laid its foundation stone on 22 April 1602. Another chapter in the town's history dates to an earlier period: on 6 May 1429, Jeanne d’Arc began the attack in Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc before Orléans was liberated. At the time, the town was occupied by the English. These dates mark two distinct historical events: the events surrounding Jeanne d’Arc and the later laying of the church's foundation stone.
The Observatoire Astronomique de Saint-Jean-le-Blanc organizes its own events. These include Nuit de l'Equinoxe in March, On The Moon Again in June and Nuits des Etoiles in August. Other events relate to significant astronomical occurrences such as eclipses and transits. Dates may vary; if an event is important to your plans, check the dates in advance.
Leisure activities on Île Charlemagne
The Île Charlemagne leisure complex covers 70 hectares and is located in the Parc de Loire. This area extends across Orléans, Saint-Jean-Le-Blanc and Saint-Denis-en-Val. Water sports, running and mountain biking are available at the leisure complex. This gives you several different types of activities to choose from, each with its own focus.
Léo Parc Aventure is also located on Île Charlemagne. During the summer season, it offers tree-top adventure courses for children aged two and up, outdoor laser tag for ages eight and up, paintball for ages twelve and up, and a digital Explor-Games treasure hunt. As seasonal opening times may vary, check the dates before making this activity a firm part of your plans. The age requirements also help you distinguish the offers by their respective minimum ages.
Choose your travel dates
If your trip depends on a seasonal activity or event, check the dates in advance. This way, you can first choose the reason for your trip and then search specifically for hotels at your chosen destination.
