Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin: Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin
Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin brings together riverside landscapes, walking and circular trails, and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the town, these different highlights can help you choose your destination: they range from a short educational trail to a two-hour circular walk, and from protected natural areas to buildings with a long history.
Riparian Woodland and Nature by the Water
At the confluence of the Loire and Loiret rivers lies Pointe de Courpain, with 13 hectares of riparian woodland. It is part of the Saint-Mesmin nature reserve. The reserve stretches along the banks of Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin and covers 263 hectares, with an additional 90-hectare buffer zone. Protected or rare species include the European beaver and otter, terns, the kingfisher, and the osprey. The riverbanks and wildlife are therefore a key part of the area’s natural attractions.
The 1.5-kilometre Croix de Micy educational trail starts at the Pointe de Courpain car park. Fourteen information panels focus on the Loire’s flora and fauna. The trail combines a manageable distance with information about riverside habitats. In the Bois de la Trésorerie, a discovery trail leads through an arboretum; the site is rich in flora and fauna and has been open since 1998.
Circular Trails and Other Activities
Two circular trails, with different distances and stated walking times, are available to help you plan your visit. The Circuit pédestre du Nouveau Bourg is three kilometres long, takes 40 minutes, and starts on Rue de la Belle Arche, where there is also a car park. The Circuit pédestre de la Confluence is longer, at eight kilometres and two hours; it starts at Pont Saint-Nicolas, which also has a car park. The distances and times give you a concrete way to distinguish a shorter walk from a longer circuit.
At Lac de Bel-Air, you can go fishing, use a fitness trail, and follow a walking path. The options bring together different ways to spend time outdoors. Canoeing on the Loire in Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin is another activity available to visitors. If you are looking for a playful challenge rather than the river and trails, ESC'APE offers a live escape game: in under an hour, players must find and combine scattered clues to escape from a room. ESC'APE also offers an introductory challenge on an Aérotrain.
Buildings, Park, and History
Historic buildings include the Vieux Four, also known as the Four à briques, and the Croix de Micy. The Vieux Four is an 18th-century brick kiln and was designated a historic monument in 1998. The ten-metre-high Croix de Micy was built after the floods of 1856 from the last stones of the abbey. The Église de Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin was built between 1865 and 1867.
The Domaine de la Trésorerie is an 18th-century building set in a listed park. The park is ideal for walking and strolling; the Domaine hosts numerous exhibitions by national and international artists. Le Saussay is also part of the local heritage: the property at 41 Rue des Quatre Tourelles is listed as a historic monument. Protected features include the façades and roofs of the main house, the wing facing the courtyard, and the barn, as well as the boundary walls.
Another distinctive structure is the Pont de l'Europe, an inclined bowstring arch bridge built between 1998 and 2000. The bridge includes a dedicated pedestrian and cycle path. Alongside the historic buildings, it offers another perspective for travellers interested in architecture and infrastructure as well as nature.
