Grusse: Heritage, Ceramics and Reculée
Accommodation in Grusse
Grusse brings together architectural history, ceramics and landscape, offering different themes for a stay. Demeure Secrétan and the traditional houses represent the town’s architectural history; Atelier du Grain d'Argile combines ceramics with a workshop and exhibition space. The Reculée de Grusse-Val-Sonnette and Belvédère de la Madone put the landscape in the foreground. When planning a trip to Grusse, you can focus on local history, ceramics or landscape.
Culture and Architecture in Grusse
Demeure Secrétan is a neoclassical residence. Antoine Joseph Secrétan retired to Grusse in 1821 and had it built there. The buildings and tomb at the Demeure have been protected as historic monuments since 28 March 2008; the estate is privately owned. Grusse’s traditional houses are grouped stone buildings with flat-tile roofs.
The Saint-Roch Chapel also has a specific date associated with it: a stone bearing the year 1770 is located above its former altar. The dates refer to different events: 1770 appears on the stone, 1821 marks Secrétan’s retirement to Grusse, and 2008 is the date the buildings and tomb were listed as historic monuments.
Ceramics and Workshop Activities
Atelier du Grain d'Argile combines a workshop with a 20-square-metre exhibition space. It showcases functional and decorative ceramics by Muriel Grosjean Kovarik. In the workshop, Muriel Grosjean Kovarik uses a Gallo-Roman terra sigillata technique and locally sourced earth. The atelier therefore focuses both on the ceramic pieces and on a specific craft technique.
Themed pottery classes and workshops are offered throughout the year; dates may vary. Visits to the exhibition space are preferably by appointment. Check the visiting arrangements in advance, as they may vary. This also means that visits to the exhibition and the classes are planned differently: appointments are relevant for the exhibition space, while the dates of the individual classes and workshops determine when they take place.
The Reculée Landscape
The Reculée de Grusse-Val-Sonnette is a natural attraction and a Jura reculée. A wooded combe characterises its landscape. The reculée is a Jura valley basin; its shape was formed by water eroding layered limestone deposits over approximately 200 million years. This is an approximate timescale that places the landscape within a long period of geological development.
Belvédère de la Madone offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the Bresse and the Burgundy hills. The viewpoint can be reached from Grusse via the GR®59. Check the trail conditions and markings before setting off. There is also a picnic area in the reculée; you can check its current condition on site. The viewpoint, trail and picnic area thus offer different ways to incorporate the landscape into your day’s plans, without requiring the same kind of preparation.
Seasonal Produce from Grusse
Les Jardins de Grusse produces organically grown vegetables and seasonal red fruits. You can buy seasonal fruit and vegetables directly in seasonal baskets or by individual order. As the produce is seasonal, it is advisable to check current ordering and collection options before your visit.
