Canohès offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: a Romanesque church, a striking mausoleum, historic waterworks, as well as film, theatre and an annual sports day. The topics range from architectural history to events with dates that vary. If you want to plan your stay around a particular event, check its current dates before travelling.

Historic buildings in Canohès

The Church of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte, also known as Sant-Quirc – Santa-Julite, is a Romanesque building dating from the 11th century and is listed as a historic monument. The two names help place the church within the history of the village. The church is a specific example of medieval architecture, while other buildings in Canohès tell stories of later periods and different functions.

The Mausoleum of Auguste Estrade is about ten metres high and cylindrical. Its shape resembles a small Corinthian pseudoperipteral temple. Built as a tomb from Roman ceramics, it was inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. Its form, approximate height, material and inspiration provide several concrete aspects to consider when describing the building’s architecture.

Another part of the architectural history is the washhouse on the Correch dels Roumanis. Architect M. Fournols built it in 1894, and it is still functional today. The church, mausoleum and washhouse represent different building purposes: a place of worship, a tomb and a communal facility. The year and the architect’s name provide a precisely dated point of reference when looking at the washhouse in the context of the village’s history.

Waterworks and landscape

Canals and tunnels are also among Canohès’s historic structures. The Les Canals canal runs through the north of the village and dates back to the 13th century. It is a peaceful, pleasant place for walks. For trip planning, it offers a combination of historical interest and an explicitly described opportunity to spend time walking alongside the canal.

The Les Coves tunnel is a preserved underground water-diversion tunnel about 800 metres long. Its length is approximate; its stated function also makes clear that it is a water-management structure. La Prade de Canohès is a wetland in the Pyrénées-Orientales department.

Film, theatre and the annual sports day

CINECAN offers free film screenings in Canohès once a month. They are open to residents of Canohès and the surrounding area, with no advance booking required. As programme details may change, it is a good idea to check the dates if you want to include a screening in your trip.

The Théâtre du Réflexe’s event hall has 100 seats and offers an annual programme; programme details may vary from year to year. The Théâtre du Réflexe theatre company tours with around ten productions for young audiences and general audiences. The theatre programme thus includes both a venue with an annual programme and productions aimed at different audience groups. Check specific dates in advance if attending a performance is important to your trip planning.

Every year between late April and mid-May, Canohès holds a sports day. It includes family and team competitions, introductory sessions and activities with local sports clubs. The exact mix may vary from one edition to another, as may the specific dates within this period. So if you plan to travel specifically for the sports day, check the dates for the relevant edition.
