Cerbère offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: marine habitats at Plage de Peyrefite, an underwater trail, coastal paths and buildings with a clearly datable history. These topics are not interchangeable when planning a trip: the Sentier sous-marin is a specific coastal visit, the Sentier littoral is a route in eight stages, and the architecture adds its own historical highlights. Railway station facilities may also play a role in planning your arrival.

Underwater trail and activities at Plage de Peyrefite

The Sentier sous-marin starts at Plage de Peyrefite in Cerbère. The 250-metre underwater trail has five observation stations showcasing the distinctive ecosystems of the Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Nature Reserve. The trail is free and open to everyone. Its opening hours vary by season; check them before your trip. Plage de Peyrefite is a pebble beach.

At the same beach, Vermeille Kayak offers sea-kayak rentals, outings and interpretation of the landscape. This gives you different ways to engage with the sea: an underwater trail with observation stations and a sea-kayaking service with several options. If you plan to use the provider’s services, check availability before your trip.

Marine nature reserve and coastal route

The Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Nature Reserve stretches between Banyuls and Cerbère and is France’s first marine nature reserve. This is a different geographical scale from an individual coastal visit to Plage de Peyrefite: the beach is in Cerbère, while the reserve extends between two towns. The underwater trail and the marine nature reserve thus offer different ways to explore marine nature.

The Sentier littoral also has a different focus from the underwater trail. It connects Argelès-sur-Mer and Cerbère in eight stages and passes through vineyards, garrigue and coves. Alongside the individual trail, there is therefore a multi-stage coastal route whose described landscapes range from vineyards to coves. The number of stages and the landscapes mentioned give the route its own profile for trip planning.

Architecture and building history

The Feu solaire du cap Cerbère has been awarded the French designation “Architecture contemporaine remarquable”. It was built in 1982 by architect Lucien Guerra. Its construction date, architect and designation provide a specific historical context as well as a recognised architectural distinction.

Another building is the Belvédère du Rayon Vert. It was built as a hotel between 1928 and 1932 and is located between the railway line and the road. The two buildings represent different periods: the Belvédère dates from 1928–1932, while the Feu solaire was built in 1982. The latter also holds the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” designation.

Practical information at the railway station

Cerbère railway station has a TER ticket machine and a short-stay drop-off zone for passengers. These facilities serve different practical purposes: the machine is for buying tickets, and the drop-off zone is for passengers getting out. If you need either for planning your arrival, check the information before your trip, as station facilities can change.
