Escaro combines mining history with trails where traces of the past can be seen in the landscape. The Musée de la Mine presents the history of mining through a unique collection of tools and everyday objects. Other highlights include the Sainte-Christine chapel in Aytua and the Pins de Salzmann du Conflent Natura 2000 site. This gives you different themes to consider when planning your trip: industrial heritage, cultural history and nature.

Mining History on the Trails and in the Museum

Until the early 1960s, Escaro was one of the major iron ore mining centres in the Canigó massif. The Musée de la Mine presents this history with a unique collection of tools and everyday objects. The collection brings together technical and everyday perspectives, complementing the view of mining history you can gain outdoors in the landscape.

The trail to the Gare minière de la Vista is an easy 8.3-kilometre hike; the stated duration is three hours, excluding breaks. The hike starts at the car park at the junction of the D27 and D27d, at an elevation of 880 metres. Allow for the three hours of walking separately from breaks. Trail conditions and markings may change, as may local road and car park conditions. Check these details before setting out.

The circular trail to the Gare minière de la Vista follows a former railway line and reveals traces of Escaro–Aytua's mining history. Another hike leads to the former mining concessions. A fluorite quarry has left its mark on the landscape there; along the way, you pass rails, inclined haulage systems and abandoned mine carts. The trails therefore highlight different traces: the route of a former railway line, the marks left by the quarry and abandoned mining installations.

Near Le Bac, the Circuit de Bailloubère also follows a former railway line. It was used to transport iron ore from the Aytua mines to the inclined haulage system above Serdinya. The route thus illustrates a specific link between the transport of the ore and its destination above Serdinya. Together with the other mining traces described here, it offers several perspectives on Escaro's historical focus without treating the different trails as one and the same.

Sainte-Christine Chapel in Aytua

The small Sainte-Christine chapel in Aytua offers a different historical perspective. Its construction was commissioned in 1592; it was built shortly afterwards and remains fully intact. The chapel was completely restored between 2014 and 2016. In its sacristy, a newly installed display case presents several objects, two statues and a 17th-century chalice. The building's history, its restoration and the objects on display give you specific points of interest if you would like to explore the chapel's history as well as its mining heritage.

Nature in the Natura 2000 Site

The Pins de Salzmann du Conflent Natura 2000 site includes Escaro as well as Fuilla, Sahorre, Serdinya and Souanyas. The site is a breeding ground for the short-toed snake eagle, an eagle that feeds exclusively on reptiles. For nature enthusiasts, this breeding habitat offers a distinct point of interest alongside the traces of past mining activity. The shared site name also provides a clear framework for considering Escaro in connection with the four other municipalities included in the area.

Whether you would like to focus your stay on mining trails, the chapel or the natural area, Escaro offers different themes that can each be explored in their own right. For the hike to the Gare minière de la Vista, the distance, duration excluding breaks, difficulty rating and starting point are available; the other mining traces described here offer different historical perspectives. This lets you plan the hike using the stated duration and add other places and trails according to your interests.
