Fontpédrouse brings together several clearly distinct themes for a trip: thermal waters, mountain hikes and cultural heritage. Each theme offers a different focus and can help you plan according to your interests.

Thermal Waters at Saint-Thomas

In the Fontpédrouse valley, the Bains thermaux de Saint-Thomas are set in a stone amphitheatre at an elevation of 1,150 m. A natural sulphur spring emerges there at 58 °C. The facilities include three outdoor pools filled with thermal water. If you plan to make the outdoor pools the focus of your visit, check the current conditions beforehand, as individual facilities may change.

Hiking: From Mountain Routes to Walking Trails

Autour du Cucurucull is a difficult 8.6 km circular mountain hike with 740 m of ascent. It starts and ends in the hamlet of Prats-Balaguer in Fontpédrouse. The route follows the Cami Ramader, a transhumance trail. The term refers to routes used for seasonal livestock movements; here, it forms part of the hike. The route offers views of peaks in the Riberola valley. The wild Riberola valley lies between the Carança massif and Puigmal.

The PR 102: LES HAMEAUX DE FONTPEDROUSE walking trail is 6.1 km long. In a direct comparison of distance, it is 2.5 km shorter than the Cucurucull loop, which also has 740 m of ascent and is classified as difficult. You can take distance, elevation gain and difficulty into account when planning. Route details and local access conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Romanesque Art and Medieval History

The hamlet of Prats-Balaguer is home to the Romanesque church “L’église de la Trinité et Sainte Marie,” built in the 11th century at an elevation of 1,300 m. A rare, listed ensemble of canvases forms the decoration for Holy Week, known in Catalan as “Monument.” Holy Week is the Christian week before Easter; the name here refers to the canvas decorations and connects the ensemble to a specific religious occasion. The church stands 150 m higher than the Bains thermaux de Saint-Thomas, which are at an elevation of 1,150 m.

The church was scheduled to open to the public on summer weekends and during Heritage Days. Before visiting, check whether access is available at these times.

El Castell represents another aspect of history. It guarded the passage to the Núria hermitage via the Coll de les Nou Fonts. The original tower was part of the signal tower chain in Roussillon and Cerdagne. A signal tower chain was used to relay signals between towers; in this way, El Castell can be associated both with guarding a passage and with regional signal transmission.
