In the upper Haut-Conflent, which forms a natural balcony, stands the fortress of Mont-Louis. You can plan a stay here around your interest in the history of fortifications, individual cultural sites and walks. One distinction is useful: the town of Mont-Louis is open to visitors, while you can enter the military citadel as part of an exclusive guided tour. Check the citadel’s visiting arrangements before your trip.

Fortified Town and UNESCO Heritage

The project to build the new fortified town of Mont-Louis was implemented in 1679; the fortifications were completed in 1681. The dates refer to two different stages: the implementation of the town project and the completion of the fortifications. Mont-Louis is one of the twelve Vauban fortifications added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. This makes it possible to distinguish the creation of the new fortified town from its later inclusion in the shared World Heritage listing.

Well, Solar Furnace and Church

The Puits des Forçats, a well carved into the rock, is located in the citadel. It is about 28 metres deep, of which 11 metres is water. When interpreting these measurements, note the distinction: the larger figure describes the depth of the well, the smaller the depth of the water.

The Four Solaire de Mont-Louis is built on a different scale: its fixed parabolic concentrator has an area of 100 square metres and consists of 860 concave mirrors. The protected Four Solaire includes the solar furnace itself, with its heliostat, concentrator and furnace. These components are located on the town’s ramparts. The well and the solar facility therefore represent very different types of construction within Mont-Louis’s cultural heritage.

The Église Saint-Louis also offers a specific detail for a cultural and historical visit: its chapels are decorated with altarpieces, frescoes and altars. If you visit several of these sights, you will encounter the fortifications, well construction, solar technology and the church’s furnishings.

Two walks with different focuses

The Tour des remparts is a yellow-marked circular route on the PR10 or PR3. It goes around Mont-Louis and takes about an hour. The Sentier des oiseaux is also marked in yellow and is an approximately 30-minute walk on the PR10; its focus is birdwatching and birdsong. You can choose according to the time you have available and your interests: the shorter walk focuses on birds, while the longer circular route goes around Mont-Louis. Both times are approximate.

Getting there by Train Jaune

Mont-Louis / La Cabanasse station is an SNCF Train Jaune station on the Villefranche-de-Conflent–Latour-de-Carol/Enveitg TER line. It is about 800 metres from Mont-Louis. This gives you a named rail connection to use when planning your journey; the distance is approximate.
