Montner offers three distinct starting points for planning your trip: Église Saint-Jacques, hiking trails and the wine-growing landscape with its terroir. If you are looking for a hotel in Montner, consider what matters most to you: are you mainly interested in architectural history, a circular hike with views, or the connection between landscape and winegrowing? This can help you decide which theme to prioritize during your stay.

Église Saint-Jacques: Architectural History and Scope of Protection

The present-day Église Saint-Jacques dates from the 17th century. Materials from a medieval structure were probably reused in its construction. This means the date of the present church and the possible origin of older building materials should be considered side by side. The façade and portal have a monumental appearance and a certain Baroque character. The western section, including the façade, portal and bell tower, is partially protected as a historic monument. This protection dates back to a decree of 27 July 1993. The distinction is important: protection applies in part to the western area mentioned, not to the entire building as a whole.

Hiking Trails Around Montner

The Montner–Força-Réal hiking route starts in Montner and follows a circular route. It leads to a former chapel, which offers panoramic views of the sea and mountains. Its starting point in Montner, circular route and scenic viewpoint give you practical details to consider when including a hike in your travel plans. Avoid this route in very strong winds.

At the entrance to Montner, there is a parking area for hikers in front of the multi-service shop. Check the local parking regulations on site if you plan to use this parking area.

The Chemin de Véronique passes through the vineyards around Montner. Along the way are vineyard huts and the ruins of former estates. This trail brings the vineyard landscape and the architectural traces of former estates to the fore. The two trails can be distinguished by their themes: the Montner–Força-Réal route combines a circular hike with panoramic views from the chapel, while the Chemin de Véronique is characterized by vineyards, huts and the ruins of former estates.

Botanical Trail and Terroir

The Força-Réal botanical trail is notable for its remarkable diversity of flora, fauna and landscapes. This broadens the focus on nature beyond individual viewpoints: plants, animals and landscapes are all central here. If you want to focus on nature and varied scenery during your stay, this diversity is a factor in its own right when choosing what to do.

The terroir around Montner combines geological characteristics with winegrowing. The stones are very crumbly and permeable to water, allowing vines to develop deep roots. “Crumbly” describes the structure of the stones; their permeability means that water can pass through them. Together, these characteristics allow the vines to root deeply. The distinctive terroir around Montner produces delicate, fruity and pleasant wines. In this way, the wine-growing landscape is linked to specific properties of the underlying soil and the wine characteristics described.
