Discover cultural history and nature in Biberach
Accommodation in Biberach
History, architecture and nature offer several distinct ways to explore the Biberach travel destination. At the Upper Swabian Kürnbach Open-Air Museum, the focus is on six centuries of history; the Steinhausen Pilgrimage Church has a clearly dated building history. Other highlights include a trail linked to monastic history, planetarium shows and nature destinations near Bad Buchau. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus mainly on historic buildings, insights into people living together, a pilgrimage route or the landscape.
History and architecture
The Upper Swabian Kürnbach Open-Air Museum brings six centuries of history to life. More than 30 historic buildings offer insights into everyday life in times gone by. The combination of a long time span and numerous buildings draws attention both to historical developments and to everyday life. If you like to explore historical topics through specific buildings, this offers a different perspective from a purely chronological account.
The Museum of the History of Christians and Jews in Laupheim covers three centuries of shared life among Christian and Jewish residents. The period is clearly defined, while the focus is also on how the two groups lived together. This adds a social perspective to architectural and monastic history. Different historical topics are thus presented side by side: everyday life in times gone by, the history of people living together, and the architectural history of significant buildings.
Architecture can also be linked to specific dates. The Steinhausen Pilgrimage Church was built from 1728 to 1731 by Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The magnificent library hall in the Baroque convent building of Schussenried Abbey is one of the most beautiful library halls in southern Germany. In Steinhausen, the focus is on the construction period and the two architects; in Schussenried, attention turns to an outstanding hall within a monastic building. Together, these examples lead from the creation of a church to the design of a library interior.
Trails, planetarium and nature
Steinhausen lies on the Way of St. James. The route runs from Nuremberg via Nördlingen, Ulm and Biberach, continuing to Bad Waldsee, Weingarten, Einsiedeln and Le Puy, and on to Santiago in Spain. The named stops illustrate the route’s extensive geographical reach. The Mönchsrother Path offers a different focus: it follows in the footsteps of the old monastic settlement, whose history is presented on 24 information panels. While the Way of St. James places Steinhausen within a route that passes through many places, the path focuses on the history of a monastic settlement.
The planetarium presents multimedia shows about astronomy and space travel, with new shows every three months. If a particular topic is important to your plans, it is worth checking the current programme before your visit.
Nature is another highlight near Bad Buchau. Wackelwald is in the immediate vicinity of the spa gardens on the outskirts of Bad Buchau and is open to the public. Lake Federsee near Bad Buchau is considered the richest peat bog in Europe in terms of finds. Alongside the historical and cultural attractions, the programme thus includes two different nature experiences: an open-access destination on the edge of town and a lake known for its wealth of finds.
Baden-Württemberg as a wider setting
Beyond the individual towns, it is worth looking at Baden-Württemberg as a wider travel destination. Large, continuous forest areas such as the Black Forest, the Swabian Forest and the Odenwald shape the state; around 40 percent of its area is forested. The seven nature parks cover around a third of the state. Hiking and cycling are among the options for active holidaymakers in Baden-Württemberg. This perspective adds a broader, state-wide context to the specific cultural and nature destinations of the Biberach travel destination.
