Accommodation in Merzhausen
Merzhausen combines cultural offerings with market life, traditional winegrowing and hiking trails. The weekly market and winegrowing also give the town its distinctive character. Depending on what you would like to do during your stay, these local features can help you decide whether Merzhausen is the right destination for you.
Culture and events calendar
Since 2012, the FORUM Merzhausen has served as a cultural and civic centre, as well as a place for people to meet and enjoy culture. Its diverse cultural programme shapes the venue’s cultural role. The Merzhausen Christmas Market is a regular fixture in the events calendar and is held each year on the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent. Around 70 participants offer goods made locally or regionally. These include arts and crafts, baked goods, honey from their own apiaries, and homemade liqueurs, schnapps and vinegars. Individual offerings may vary. If the date is important for planning your trip, check the municipality’s current announcement for the relevant year.
Weekly market and winegrowing
The Merzhausen weekly market offers, among other things, fruit and vegetables from the region, homemade jams, cakes and baked goods, honey, Mediterranean specialities, olives, oil, vinegar, meat, sausages and flowers. The selection may change. Merzhausen also has a tradition of winegrowing: Müller-Thurgau, Gutedel, Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Riesling are cultivated on around 15 hectares. Wines produced in Merzhausen are described as fresh, fruity and mostly dry. The weekly market and winegrowing offer different insights into regional produce: the market’s selection ranges from food to flowers, while winegrowing focuses on the grape varieties listed and the wine style described.
Architectural history and literary connections
The manor house of the Jesuit Castle was built in 1666. The Jesuit Castle is also used as a starting point for numerous hikes. The German writer Kurt Heynicke lived in Merzhausen from 1943 until his death on 18 March 1985. The municipality of Merzhausen reviewed and archived his estate. The literary connection therefore encompasses both Heynicke’s years in Merzhausen and the municipality’s work on his estate. Another religious landmark is the Schönstatt Chapel in Merzhausen, known as the “Shrine of Vocation”.
Trails and BĂĽrgerBad
The bird-watching trail is a circular route that can be walked in either direction. It starts at the information board in the village centre, at the Rondell Dardilly in Merzhausen. The trail’s terrain is an important consideration when choosing a route: because of the steep climbs and descents and the narrow path through the Hagste woodland, it is not suitable for pushchairs. The Hexental adventure trail also runs nearby, following a historic route from Au to Bollschweil; it is about 10 km long. The BürgerBad in Merzhausen has a swimming pool with a lane-swimming area and a non-swimmer area. The pool measures 12 by 25 m. If you plan to visit, check the operator’s latest information on public access.
