Discover Heilbronn: Culture, Wine and Nature
Accommodation in Heilbronn
Heilbronn combines the Science Dome and hands-on activities with historic buildings, wine and countryside. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: explore exhibitions and architecture, take a walk through the wine-growing landscape, or discover green spaces and natural areas. The places and activities below show how varied a stay in Heilbronn can be.
Experiments and Culture in Heilbronn
At experimenta, around 275 interactive stations invite visitors to experiment and discover the world through hands-on activities. The Science Dome presents laser and experimental shows on a 360-degree dome projection. There are also special programs for daycare groups and school classes: in the labs and the experimental kitchen, they can choose from more than 70 courses with expert guidance, such as programming robots, examining DNA or making gummy bears.
The historic Deutschhof brings together architectural history and a museum. Built in the early 13th century, it was once the seat of the Teutonic Order. It has served as a museum since 1991. Since January 2026, visitors can experience four collections of the Heilbronn museums together there: archaeology, as well as natural, cultural and art history. The Kunsthalle Vogelmann adds to the cultural offerings with temporary exhibitions spread across around 800 square meters on three floors. Its focus is on sculpture exhibitions and surveys ranging from classical modernism to contemporary art.
Heilbronn’s architectural history can also be seen at Kilianskirche and Götzenturm. Kilianskirche is known for its distinctive octagonal tower and is considered the first building north of the Alps to feature Renaissance elements. Götzenturm was built in 1392, probably using stones from the former Klingenberg Castle. Until the 19th century, it was called “Square Tower”; it received its current name in connection with Goethe’s play “Götz von Berlichingen.”
Experience the Wine Panorama Trail and the Neckar
The Wine Panorama Trail is just under six kilometers long, with an elevation difference of around 100 meters. It is also manageable for inexperienced hikers. From April to October, wines from the Wein Villa wineries are served in rotation along the trail at the Martin-Heinrich-Wengerthäusle, along with red Wengerter sausage, cheese and pretzels. As this is a seasonal offering, it is advisable to check whether it will be available each year before your trip.
A guided canoe tour of the city on the Neckar offers a different perspective on Heilbronn. It follows the Neckarmeile, passing the island tip and going through the hand-operated König-Wilhelm Lock. The tour is suitable for beginners and can be booked for groups of ten or more from late April to mid-October. Check dates and availability for your planned travel period.
Traditional Besenwirtschaft wine taverns are also part of Heilbronn’s culinary character: wine is served there directly by the producer. These establishments open seasonally or on individual days. Dishes associated with them include Maultaschen with potato salad, boiled meat and freshly baked Besen bread; which establishments are open varies.
Green Spaces and Natural Areas
Wertwiesenpark on the Neckar covers 15 hectares and offers playgrounds, a halfpipe for skateboarders, a mini-golf course and a Kneipp facility. At Pfühlpark, families will find a large sand playground, a giant slide, a large climbing net and table tennis tables. If these facilities are important to your plans, you can check their condition before your visit.
The Köpfertal nature reserve, covering more than 30 hectares, lies in eastern Heilbronn. It connects urban green spaces with valuable natural areas and offers space for recreation as well as protection for rare species. In the lower valley, meadows, wetlands and forests alternate; the upper course lies in the forest. The area has been protected since 1985 to preserve wetlands, ravine forest and a rocky gorge. Heilbronn’s green spaces each have their own character: Wertwiesenpark and Pfühlpark focus on recreational facilities, while landscape and nature conservation define Köpfertal.
