Jagsthausen: Roman History, the Jagst and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Jagsthausen
Jagsthausen brings together the history of Götz von Berlichingen, Roman-era archaeological sites and trails along the Jagst. Different points of interest can help you plan your trip: Götzenburg Castle and its collections offer insights into local and family history, while the Roman Baths and Limes sites tell the story of Roman times. Hiking trails, cycling routes and a guided nature walk provide further ways to explore the area during your stay.
Götzenburg Castle, Museums and Roman History
Götz von Berlichingen was born in 1480 at Götzenburg Castle in Jagsthausen. Jagsthausen Castle Museum displays items from the family collection, Götz von Berlichingen’s iron hand, and Roman finds from the Limes fort and the Roman civilian settlement. The collection thus brings together evidence from different periods. Important for planning: the Castle Museum can currently be visited only by prior appointment. Arrange your visit before travelling.
The White Palace was built in 1792. In the town centre, the open-air Roman Baths Museum displays the floor plan of a Roman military bathhouse dating from around 200 AD. Another museum, “Constant Companions – Roman Everyday Pottery from the Krapf Collection,” showcases Roman everyday pottery and offers insights into Roman life around 200 AD. Roman history can therefore be encountered both in architectural remains and in everyday objects.
A trail with educational information boards passes a reconstructed Roman well on its way to the fort area and the museum in Götzenburg Castle. Benches marked “World Heritage LIMES” stand along three trails in the municipality. Their information boards explain conditions along the Roman Empire’s border between 160 and 260 AD. A Limes tour in Hohenlohe starts in Jagsthausen, by the remains of the fort and the open-air Roman Baths Museum.
Hiking and Cycling along the Jagst
Eight circular hiking trails explore the countryside on both sides of the Jagst within the municipality. Together, they cover 85 kilometres; the individual trails range from 3.5 to 19 kilometres. The stated route lengths give you a concrete basis for comparing and choosing a circular walk by distance.
Cycling routes can also be distinguished by their connections: Jagsthausen lies on the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route, which has been awarded four stars by the ADFC. The German Limes Cycle Route and the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route intersect in Jagsthausen. If the current ADFC rating is important to your planning, check its status before travelling.
Guided Nature Walk
A 120-minute guided nature walk is offered in Jagsthausen. It combines stories and legends from the past with views over the Jagst Valley. This makes it different from the circular hiking trails, for which route lengths are given: here, the focus is on the guided duration and the stories shared along the way. Check current dates and booking details as you plan your trip.
For a visit focused on history, you can explore Götzenburg Castle, the Roman Baths and the Limes information; for outdoor activities, the hiking trail distances or the two intersecting cycling routes can help you find your bearings. These are different ways to experience Jagsthausen, which you can choose according to your interests in culture, archaeology or outdoor activities.
