Discover Leingarten: History, Wine and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Leingarten
When looking for a hotel in Leingarten, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: history, woodland and vineyard trails, or a wine tour with tastings. These attractions differ in what they offer and how much time they take—from historical exhibitions to a circular hike of around five hours.

History and local heritage
The Heuchelberger Warte is a prominent landmark in Leingarten’s history. Count Eberhard im Bart had it built in 1483; it formed part of a 23.5-kilometre defensive earthwork. The tower is also a destination for outings, offering panoramic views. The Heuchelberger Wald adventure trail leads through the local recreation area to the tower, where a 2.7-kilometre circular route connects. The main trail is 6.3 kilometres long and starts at Leingarten Mitte S-Bahn station.
The permanent exhibition at the “Altes Rathaus” Museum features archaeological exhibits and finds from the Großgartach culture. A timeline and explanatory displays on dendrochronology and stratigraphy complement the exhibition. The museum also covers water supply in earlier centuries and past solutions for wastewater management. Records of local crafts date back to the mid-19th century; materials on emigration and immigration cover the 19th and 20th centuries. Archaeological finds are thus presented alongside topics relating to utilities, crafts and migration.
The Frankenschanze in Leingarten is a single historical landmark: its oval rampart is 84 metres long and 66 metres wide. An information board describes the site. It therefore offers a different focus from the museum, whose permanent exhibition covers a range of topics and periods.
Woodland and vineyard trails
The Heuchelberger Wald adventure trail is suitable for children and adults and has 45 interactive stations. On the final stretch, hikers are treated to a panorama of the Heuchelberg’s vineyard slopes and the surrounding villages. The stations and views give the trail distinctive points of interest, both in terms of its content and scenery.
Another option is the “In bio veritas” wine experience tour: this easy circular hike takes around five hours and follows mostly paved paths, with gentle ascents and descents and some sections on vineyard steps. It is generally possible to do the tour year-round. It starts and ends at Weingut Weinreuter in Leingarten. You can get there by taking S-Bahn line S4 to Leingarten West and then following a signposted footpath. Check the S-Bahn schedule before setting out. The tour includes tastings of five distinctive wines and a non-alcoholic alternative. It also includes a small soup, a selection from the Geifertshofener organic cheese dairy and fresh farmhouse bread. Unlike the adventure trail, this tour focuses not only on hiking but also on wine and food tastings.
Wine and dining
Weinkulinaria also pairs regional wines with complementary culinary offerings. Since 2023, Leingarten’s five winemakers have organised the wine festival together with the town of Leingarten. If you’d like to include Weinkulinaria in your travel plans, check the current event dates in advance.
