Karlsbad lies on the northern edge of the Black Forest, above the Rhine Valley. Large, continuous woodland areas and hiking trails offer opportunities to relax. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature and outdoor activities as well as cultural attractions and seasonal highlights. You can plan your stay around a specific route, a seasonal bloom or a cultural program.

Woodland and seasonal nature

A seasonal highlight is the ten-hectare rhododendron park. More than a hundred rhododendron species bloom there in May. If you want to include the bloom in your trip plans, May is a useful guide; the flowering period may vary from year to year.

The Hermannsee also offers a distinctive natural setting: this artificial pond was created in the 1970s and is a gathering place for amphibians in the region. The former railway embankment from Langensteinbach to Ittersbach is used as a nature trail. Temporary conditions may affect access to the trail, so check local conditions before setting out.

Forest Culture Trail and hiking routes

The family-oriented Forest Culture Trail combines nature, art and culture with play stations. When choosing your route, you can therefore consider not only its length but also whether you would like play stations and cultural features along the way.

The Forest Culture Trail starts at the edge of Spielberg, in the direction of Langensteinbach, about 300 meters from a tram stop. The trail is around one kilometer long from the car park. At the final station, you can rent a clay oven for pizza, bread or tarte flambée. The oven must be booked in advance.

Another option is the “To the Ruins of the Chapel of Saint Barbara” route: an easy circular hike covering 9.77 kilometers. At 9.77 kilometers, this route is considerably longer than the Forest Culture Trail. You can choose your hike based on your preferred distance and route format.

Haus Conrath in Langensteinbach

Haus Conrath in Karlsbad-Langensteinbach is one of the oldest houses in Langensteinbach and is a protected cultural monument. The house was built around 1662; in June 2006, the Baden-WĂĽrttemberg Monument Foundation selected it as Monument of the Month.

Today, Haus Conrath serves as a cultural center, hosting regular exhibitions, readings and concerts. The program may change. If you would like to include a specific event in your trip plans, check the event details in advance.

Regional context within the Karlsruhe travel destination

Within the broader Karlsruhe travel destination, Karlsruhe district stretches from the Rhine Plain in the west, through the rolling hills of the Kraichgau in the east, to the foothills of the northern Black Forest in the south. Bruchsal Palace is also part of this wider regional context: Balthasar Neumann’s staircase is described as the “crown of all Baroque staircases.” The district also has a cycle network of more than 1,500 kilometers. As the infrastructure may change, check current route information when planning specific rides.
