Ubstadt-Weiher: Nature Trails, Wine and Roman History
Accommodation in Ubstadt-Weiher
There are several different ways to plan a trip to Ubstadt-Weiher, with a focus on nature trails, wine, Roman history, cycling or a day by the water. Each of the trails and day-trip destinations has its own highlights.
Nature trails around Zeutern
The nature trail in the district of Zeutern is about 4 km long. It leads through three sunken lanes, along the edge of the forest and offers views of the Rhine plain and fruit meadows. Eighteen information panels cover geology, flora, fauna and ecology. The trail is designed as a family outing in nature, connecting the landscape with topics visitors can explore along the way.
You can reach the nature trail by taking S-Bahn line S31 to Zeutern station; from there, continue on foot through the historic town center. Check current connections before you set off. For another circular walk, the Hohlen- und Höhenrundweg includes the nature trail as well as Hirschhohle and Hochberghohle. There are places to rest at Paulus Chapel and at the Eisengrubenwald barbecue area, which also has a playground. These named stops and rest areas help you plan your route.
Wine trail and historic wine presses
The Zeutern wine trail is a circular route that starts and ends at the Zeutern wine press house. Ten information panels among the vines each focus on a grape variety, its characteristics, origins and distinctive features. Wine is the main focus of this trail; its circular route and shared start and finish give the outing a clear structure.
In Ubstadt, the wine press house is the oldest building in the town. It was built around 1600 as the tithe wine press of the Prince-Bishopric of Speyer and is now used as a cultural venue; it is also used for celebrations. The Firstständerhaus can be rented for private and club events. If you are planning a celebration, check the rental arrangements in advance.
Roman museum and history in Stettfeld
The “In the Footsteps of the Romans” circular route combines a hike with a visit to the Roman Museum Stettfeld. Guided tours can be arranged for groups, including outside opening hours; this requires prior coordination. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest visitor information and arrange a group tour well in advance.
The history of present-day Stettfeld includes a Roman settlement founded around 120 AD. Its residents were mainly craftspeople and merchants. The circular route explores the Roman theme and connects it with a museum visit. The option to arrange a guided tour gives groups a concrete way to plan their visit.
Hardtsee and the Kraich Cycle Route
The Hardtsee leisure center has a large bathing lake with excellent water quality, an extensive sunbathing lawn and activities for relaxation and exercise. Check seasonal access before your visit. This makes it possible to include time by the water in your plans without confusing it with the hiking and educational trails.
The Kraich Cycle Route also offers a distinct perspective on the region. It follows the Kraichbach from its source in Sternenfels to an old arm of the Rhine near Ketsch, reaching the western edge of the Kraichgau in Ubstadt-Weiher. In the Stettfeld section, the route runs through the Bruch nature reserve along the renaturalized Kraichbach. The route thus combines a long-distance course with a specific natural area in Stettfeld.
Getting there and planning
