Fröhnd combines themed trails, cycling routes, winter sports and historic buildings. The municipality comprises nine districts: Hof, Ittenschwand, Kastel, Unterkastel, Ober- and Niederhepschingen, Künaberg, Stutz and Holz. They lie at elevations between 400 and 1,200 metres. Shady forests and sunny, open mountain slopes shape the landscape and give a stay in Fröhnd a varied scenic setting.

Walking and cycling in Fröhnd

The Hirtenpfad and the Urwaldpfad are two themed trails in Fröhnd. They offer specific points of reference if you also want to consider themed trails when choosing your stay. The names refer to different trails; what they have in common is that they are classified as themed routes in Fröhnd.

There are also different types of cycling routes: in Fröhnd, numerous mountain bike routes follow wide forest roads and narrow trails. For e-bike tours, a paved high-altitude route leads towards Pfaffenberg. You can then cycle back towards the Upper Wiesental via the Wiesental cycle path. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the forest roads and trails mentioned on the one hand and the e-bike route described on the other.

Ski tracks and winter sports

Two ski tracks with different descriptions start at Tannenboden, between the districts of Hof and Ittenschwand. The Tannenboden trail is short and easy, and is suitable for practising both classic cross-country skiing and skating technique. The Hörnerspur is a 25.9-kilometre high-altitude trail with an elevation gain of 818 metres. A short practice trail and a longer high-altitude trail are therefore different options for a winter stay.

The Hornlift is in the district of Hof, is 1,000 metres long and climbs 300 metres. In winter, it offers skiing and snowboarding. If your stay is centred on the ski tracks or the lift, check current conditions and operating status in advance.

Buildings and history

In Unterkastel, the Kastler Bridge crosses the River Wiese as an arch bridge. It was built in 1908/09 and renovated in 1981. In Ittenschwand stands a chapel built in 1767, with a Rococo altar depicting Mater Dolorosa. The two buildings reflect different aspects of the local landscape: the bridge crossing the river and the chapel with its distinctive altar design.

The Klopfsäge in Fröhnd, in the district of Holz, was built in 1808 and is a protected monument. The tunnel lies along the former railway line between Niederhepschingen and Unterkastel. Parts of the former railway line were developed as a cycling and hiking trail in the 1970s. The bridge, chapel, sawmill and railway line reflect different historical connections; the information about trail use refers to parts of the former line.

Farm visits and products

The Leopoldhof is also part of what Fröhnd has to offer: guided farm tours are available there, and the farm sells its own products directly on site. This can complement a stay focused mainly on walking, cycling or winter sports with an insight into a working farm.

When choosing a place to stay, your interests may be the deciding factor: themed trails, cycling routes and the winter activities described here offer different options. Historic buildings and the landscape provide further points of interest for planning, so Fröhnd need not be reduced to a single season or activity.
