Königheim brings together two distinct highlights: the art-historical furnishings of the parish church and the LT 9 circular hiking trail. The municipality is also surrounded by a landscape of forests and stretches of farmland. For planning your trip, it helps to make a simple distinction: would you like to focus mainly on sacred art, or set aside time for a longer hike?

Sacred Art in the Parish Church

Königheim’s parish church is home to the “Königheim Mount of Olives,” a work of art from the Riemenschneider workshop dating to 1499. Above the tabernacle is a six-metre-high painting depicting the martyrdom of Saint John of Nepomuk in the Vltava. These include a workshop piece with a precise date and a large-format painting with a named subject and a designated place in the church interior.

The furnishings also include an richly decorated Rococo pulpit, created by the sculptor Herwith of Karlstadt in 1756. The large ceiling painting in the nave depicts the Adoration of the Magi. The years 1499 and 1756 make clear the time between the Mount of Olives and the pulpit; the ceiling painting adds another subject to the church’s furnishings.

The parish church’s design also has a connection to another work by Balthasar Neumann: it was based on a plan Neumann had drawn up twenty years earlier for St. Paulinus’ Church in Trier. This makes it possible to understand the church not only through individual works of art, but also through its architectural design.

Landscape and Circular Hiking Trail LT 9

The Haigertal nature reserve is part of the landscape surrounding the municipality of Königheim, which is characterised by forests and stretches of farmland. It is a distinctive feature of this landscape; the circular hiking trail LT 9 has a separately described route.

Circular hiking trail LT 9 starts at the church square in Königheim and leads through vineyards, open farmland with sweeping views, and extensive forests. It is 15.3 kilometres long; the walking time is 4.5 hours, and the elevation difference is 225 metres. The landscape details complement the route’s key figures, combining vineyards and open views with extensive woodland.
