Külsheim: Town of Fountains, Half-Timbered Houses and Wine Trails
Accommodation in Külsheim
Külsheim combines historic buildings, fountains and wine trails with circular routes through the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Külsheim, you can first plan your stay around your main interest: the old town, wine or hiking. The Old Town and Fountains Tour offers a practical starting point for finding your way around.
Old Town, Fountains and Architectural History
The Old Town and Fountains Tour begins at Schlossplatz. Parking is available there for cars and buses; since parking options can change, it is best to check the current situation before you travel. There are 18 fountains in the historic town centre. They give Külsheim its nickname, “Town of Fountains,” and provide the tour with its theme.
The tour’s stops include Külsheim Castle, with its imposing keep dating from the late 13th century. St. Martin’s Catholic Church is also on the route: the lower part of its tower is Romanesque and dates to around 1200. The Old Town Hall adds to the historic buildings with its half-timbering dating from 1522. Külsheim’s St. Catherine’s Chapel dates to 1444.
The Külsheimer Höhe Museum focuses on the life stories of people who lived and worked in Külsheim. If you plan to visit the museum, check its current opening hours in advance. The town’s history can also be placed in context: Külsheim is first mentioned in 1144. In the Middle Ages, control of the town changed frequently through pledges or sales. In 1255, the town came under the Electorate of Mainz; further changes of rule followed in rapid succession.
Wine Trails and Bocksbeutel Bottles
A signposted wine trail runs as a circular route between Külsheim and Uissigheim and includes tastings. The trail and tasting opportunities may be organised seasonally. If you plan to attend a tasting, check in advance whether one is offered during your travel dates.
The Hoher Herrgott vineyard covers around 36 hectares and has been cultivated again since 1951. Wines from Hoher Herrgott and Uissigheimer Stahlberg are bottled in the Bocksbeutel bottles characteristic of Franconia. The vineyard, circular route and distinctive bottle shape each offer a different way to discover Külsheim’s wine tradition.
Hiking and Cycling
Two circular routes starting in Külsheim are easy to distinguish by length. The LT 6 – Wasser.Wein.Weite. starts at Schlossplatz, is about 11 kilometres long and is certified by the German Hiking Association. The signposted LT 4 – Schönert is longer, at around 14.5 kilometres. It passes through the Hildbrandzellenklinge gorge and returns through peaceful high forest.
Külsheim is also a stop on a cycling route: the 160-kilometre Sportive runs through the town from Wertheim to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Since route descriptions may be revised, check the current route before setting off.
Nearby: Kneipp Facility in the Amorsbach Valley
The Kneipp facility at the grotto in the Amorsbach Valley is about two kilometres northeast of Külsheim. A spring from a Marian grotto feeds the Kneipp pool; benches and tables are available for resting. Since the facility’s condition may change, it is advisable to check the latest local information before visiting.
