Two distinct areas of interest can help you plan a trip to Werbach: architectural and local history, and hiking. In the main village, you’ll find St. Martin’s Parish Church and a signposted circular hiking trail; other cultural sites are located in the villages of Gamburg, Niklashausen and Wenkheim, which are part of Werbach. This lets you organize the stops by location and theme rather than treating them as a single tour.

Church and Gamburg Castle

St. Martin’s Parish Church in Werbach was built between 1841 and 1843 to plans by architect August Mosbrugger. Its organ was made later: in 1978, the Vleugels organ-building workshop in Hardheim built the instrument. The two dates help distinguish the history of the church’s construction from that of its organ.

Gamburg Castle stands in Gamburg, a village that is part of Werbach. Its hall building dates from the 12th century and is described as unique in Europe. Secular wall paintings from before 1219 are found in a hall building at the castle that was originally Romanesque; they are described as the oldest north of the Alps. The castle park has its own historical significance: the Baroque park, decorated with statues, contains botanical rarities, was originally laid out in the 17th century by the Barons of Dalberg, and is considered an exceptional cultural monument.

Guided tours of the castle are offered on weekends and public holidays during the season, as well as by request; check the dates before your visit. The castle also hosts painting and drawing courses for beginners and advanced participants on several weekends a year. If you’re interested, confirm the specific course dates in advance.

Niklashausen and Wenkheim

In Niklashausen, the Pfeiferstube in the local history museum in the old town hall documents the life and work of Hans Böhm. Tours of the museum and the Late Gothic church are available by arrangement; plan your visit accordingly. The church is a listed monument, its foundation stone was laid in 1519, and its sacristy has a star vault. Other historic features in Niklashausen include a wood-carved Baroque pulpit and a memorial plaque to Pfeiferhannes.

Trails in Niklashausen also bring together culture and landscape: the Niklashausen Society for History and Culture maintains the Pfeifer Trail and a section of the European Cultural Route. Both trails connect culture and landscape.

The former synagogue in Wenkheim has an original coffered stucco ceiling and a women’s gallery with latticework. The mikveh was used by Jewish men and women for ritual cleansing. The synagogue’s annual program includes readings, films, concerts and themed evenings; check the specific event dates. Regular visits are possible on Saturdays and Sundays from May to October between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., with guided tours available by telephone appointment. As seasonal opening times may change, check the details before your visit.

Circular Hiking Trail and Liebfrauenbrunn

The circular hiking trail in Werbach begins at the market square and is marked with a blue 1 on a white background. At the edge of the village, it passes a volleyball court and a water-treading facility; it then returns to the market square via the main road. On the way out of Werbach, the route follows Liebfrauenbrunnstraße and Blauer Rain road in the direction of the nature reserves. When planning, look out for the trail markers on site.

The pilgrimage chapel of Liebfrauenbrunn is separate from the trail and lies about 2.5 kilometers outside Werbach in the Welzbach Valley, in the direction of Werbachhausen. There is a spring beneath the chapel.

The Main-Tauber District as a Wider Travel Area

The wider travel destination of the Main-Tauber District offers further themes for planning a trip beyond Werbach. The Taubertal wine shop at Bronnbach Abbey offers bookable wine tastings; more than 20 winemakers and wineries present selected wines from Baden, Württemberg and Franconia there. Bronnbach Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery. At district level, the cycling map lists 18 circular and point-to-point routes ranging from 24 to 240 kilometers, including the five-star cycling route “The Classic,” the Taubertal Cycle Route, the Wine Cycling Tour and the Main-Tauber-Franconian Cycling Eight. Check the route details before planning a specific tour.
