Heubach offers a variety of ways to shape your trip: a circular trail across the Rosenstein plateau, historic architecture in the town centre and insights into local history. There are also selected stages for different activities and guided experiences. You can therefore decide what to focus on during your stay by considering whether hiking, physical activity or cultural history is your priority.

Circular Trails, Stages and Rosenstein

The archaopfad ROSENSTEIN® is a 6 km circular trail across the mountain massif’s plateau. It covers a total elevation gain of 266 metres and has 11 stops; you can also walk it in sections. The distance and elevation figures provide specific guidance for planning your tour, without requiring you to walk the entire loop.

The Heubach Tour complements this circular trail with 14 selected stages in and around Heubach. They offer opportunities for hiking, cycling, jogging, Nordic walking, mountain biking and climbing. This gives you two different options: a described loop with set route details and a selection of stages for various activities.

Rosenstein, a worthwhile day-trip destination near Heubach, features imposing rock formations, prehistoric ramparts, a castle ruin and panoramic views. These features bring together landscapes and traces of history. If you are interested in the area’s history, the ramparts and castle ruin offer a different perspective on Rosenstein than its rocks and views.

Half-Timbered Houses and Heubach’s History

Several half-timbered buildings form the centre of Heubach. The local history museum, “Heubacher Geschichtssplitter,” covers the key topics in Heubach’s history in chronological order. This lets you explore the town’s history in sequence, while the half-timbered houses define the architectural character of the town centre.

A historical guided tour takes you to the Blockturm and through the former weavers’ quarter; it also includes a visit to the “Anna Vetter” house. Dates depend on the availability of the guides. The Vetter house was the former home of Heubach resident Anna Vetter. It is furnished with pieces that reflect the original living conditions and is not a conventional museum. A visit must be arranged in advance.

Another historical experience is available to schools, teachers and other groups: the Förderverein Schwäbisch Gmünder Schulmuseum e.V. offers them the chance to experience a school lesson as it would have been around 1900 in a historic classroom. Since December 2008, the classroom has been located in the Knights’ Hall of Heubach Castle. Confirm the current arrangements with the provider in advance.

More Experiences and the Regional Setting

Scenic flights are another activity available in Heubach. They can be booked with Flugschule Heubach Charterservice GmbH. As availability may change, check directly with the flight school before your trip to see whether bookings are available.

Those looking to explore more of the Ostalb district will find other hiking and cultural destinations there. The Limes circular hiking trail near Rainau is about 11 km long and takes approximately 2.5 hours on foot. Lorch Monastery offers a different focus: it was founded in 1102 as a burial place by Frederick I, the first Hohenstaufen ruler, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen. The complex includes a medieval church, the cloister, utility buildings and the Marsiliusturm, which offers views of the monastery complex, the gardens and the surrounding area. The permanent exhibition provides information about 900 years of monastic history, including through the ornate Lorch choir books.
