Discover Obergröningen: St. Nicholas Church and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Obergröningen
Obergröningen lies on the edge of the Frickenhofer Höhe. St. Nicholas Church stands in the town center and is a landmark for both the parish and the municipality. It is a striking feature of the townscape and a clear focus of local culture.
St. Nicholas Church: Architecture and Altar
St. Nicholas Church is a Romanesque fortified tower church built in the 14th century, with Gothic elements. The term “fortified tower church” draws attention to the distinctive type of tower; the Gothic elements provide an additional architectural feature of the building. For travelers interested in architecture, this offers specific points of interest: the building’s form, its period of construction, and its design.
The church’s Late Gothic Apostle Altar is a notable point of art-historical interest in its own right. It probably dates to around 1525 and was made in the workshop of an artist from Gmünd. In Obergröningen, the church building and this individual Late Gothic work thus offer distinct cultural points of interest.
More Cultural and Natural Attractions in the Ostalbkreis
The Upper German-Raetian Limes, in the wider travel destination of the Ostalbkreis, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. It runs through the municipality of Rainau in the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg, and Dalkingen for a distance of around six kilometers. The most beautiful sections and the most important individual monuments of the Limes have been preserved in a unique concentration at Limes Park Rainau. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb region. The Limes Gate at Dalkingen is a unique structure along the entire stretch of the Limes between the Rhine and the Danube.
The signposted Limes circular hiking trail is another highlight in this region. Near Rainau, it is about 11 kilometers long and takes approximately two and a half hours to walk. The route runs from the Limes wall and the Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through Mahdholz forest, following the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. The distance and approximate walking time together provide a concrete basis for planning the hike.
Other historical attractions in the Ostalbkreis include Lorch Abbey. It was founded in 1102 by the first Hohenstaufen, Frederick I, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen as a burial place. The complex includes a medieval church, cloister, farm buildings, and the Marsilius Tower. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the abbey complex, herb garden, sensory garden, and surrounding area. The permanent exhibition explores 900 years of the abbey’s history, including through the richly decorated Lorch choir books.
The Ostalbkreis also offers points of interest for nature lovers and hikers. A nature trail in the Wental valley offers insights into the unspoiled nature of this ancient river valley. The hike through the Wental toward Steinheim is particularly suitable for families. Along the way, visitors can discover gnarled trees and bizarre rock formations in which, with a little imagination, fairy-tale characters and animals can be made out. Alongside historical attractions, the region also offers landscapes and opportunities for nature observation.
