Waldstetten: Hiking, Pilgrimage Routes and Local History Museum
Accommodation in Waldstetten
Waldstetten offers many opportunities for circular hikes and walks to viewpoints and sights. Numerous hiking car parks and well-marked trails make it easy to find your way. Pilgrimage routes and local history provide further points of interest. When planning your stay, you can give outdoor activities and culture different priorities.
Hiking Trails and Views
Hiking options range from circular hikes to walks leading to viewpoints and sights. There are numerous hiking car parks and well-marked trails to help you find your way around. In 2021, the Waldstetten branch of the Swabian Alb Association marked six hiking trails. They vary in length, walking time and difficulty. This lets you compare routes based on the time you have available and the level of challenge you want.
The Top of Ostalb hiking route passes a wildflower meadow with views into the Christental and Lautertal valleys. The “Dreikaiserberge-Blick” viewpoint offers views of all three Kaiserberge. These provide different perspectives for planning your hikes: a route with meadow and valley views, or a viewpoint overlooking the three mountains.
A Three Kaiser Mountains circular route can be accessed at Metlangen, near Waldstetten. From Straßdorf, a cycle path along a former railway line leads to an access point for the circular route; this approach is about five kilometres long. If you plan to take this route, check the current trail route before your trip.
Pilgrimage Routes and Chapel
Waldstetten lies along four stages of the main circular pilgrimage route; eight pilgrimage-route circular hikes also cross the municipality. The routes therefore differ in how they connect to the main circular route and as circular hikes in their own right. A pilgrimage-route guide describes the trails, as well as the churches and chapels along the way. If you are interested in religious buildings and routes, the guide provides a shared theme for exploring them. Check the latest route information before setting out.
The Reiterles Chapel, built in 1714, is considered a landmark of Waldstetten. It is another point of interest for visitors who want to include local history in their plans as well as hiking.
Waldstetten Local History Museum
The Waldstetten Local History Museum covers a wide range of subjects: geology, archaeology and fossils, as well as local history, the world wars, the post-war period, expulsion and popular piety. The collection thus offers a variety of points of interest, from natural and early history to topics from the 20th century.
Local crafts include bone turning, pearl knitting and pipe making. The museum also gives demonstrations of traditional bone turning, knitting beaded purses and making pipes from burr wood. The museum offers guided tours, special and themed exhibitions, lectures, activities and a holiday programme. Refreshments are also available in the museum room. Individual programme offerings may vary.
Other Activities and the Regional Setting
There is a high ropes course in the forest at Schwarzhornhaus. Before your trip, check whether it will be open on your chosen date. Local culinary specialities include two distilleries, a full-time beekeeper, a flour shop and a farm shop. If you plan to visit any of these businesses, check in advance whether they are currently open; individual offerings may change.
The wider Ostalbkreis destination also has history and culture trails, as well as scenic walks featuring secluded lakes, striking rocks and caves. These regional themes offer another perspective on the landscapes and cultural attractions of the Ostalbkreis.
