A stay in Aulendorf can encompass everything from architectural and local history to local traditions and nature. The castle and civic museum offer insights into cultural history, while Steeger See, its nature trail and the cycling network provide a different focus. You can decide which side to put at the center of your visit based on your interests and travel dates.

Cultural history at the castle, museum and church

Aulendorf Castle is a cultural monument of particular importance. Its value as a source for architectural history and the high artistic quality of its individual buildings contribute to this significance. Inside the castle, PLAYMOBIL artist Oliver Schaffer has created a toy world featuring dioramas and video projections. The temporary exhibition has been extended until May 2027. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Civic Museum in the Old Cinema offers a tour through the history of Aulendorf. Highlights include the original furnishings of a church vestment embroidery workshop. St. Martin’s Parish Church adds another perspective on Aulendorf’s art history: works from various periods have been preserved there, from the Late Gothic period to the present day. Together, the three sites offer different ways to explore history and culture—from the castle and its individual buildings, to local history, to the works in the church.

Local traditions and recurring events

Aulendorf’s Fasnet carnival is a deeply rooted local tradition featuring five masked characters, including the Aulendorf Eckhexe. Another regular event in the annual calendar is the Castle and Children’s Festival: it lasts two days and takes place every year on the third weekend in August. The exact dates vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

The two traditions have different focal points: Fasnet is characterized by its five masked characters, while the Castle and Children’s Festival is defined by its two-day program and recurring time of year. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a visit connected with Fasnet and a stay over the festival weekend.

Steeger See and nature trails

Steeger See natural swimming area is a seasonal bathing facility. A three-meter-high diving tower stands in the middle of the lake; there is also a diving board, several wooden platforms and a jetty that extends 15 meters into the lake. The nature trail runs around the natural swimming area. At about 1.2 kilometers long, it is suitable for walks and jogging and showcases the flora and fauna of the Steeger See landscape conservation area.

The nature trail is a good option for a short, clearly defined route. There is also an extensive, well-signposted network of cycling routes around Aulendorf, which is also suitable for hiking. The trail at Steeger See and the wider network therefore offer different options: a route of about 1.2 kilometers or further cycling and hiking routes in the surrounding area. Bear in mind that the natural swimming area is a seasonal facility.

More activities and getting here

At Adventure Golf Aulendorf, you can play against each other on 18 naturally landscaped artificial-grass lanes. This is a different kind of activity from a museum tour or a walk outdoors. Check whether the facility is currently open before your visit.

The train station may also be useful when planning your trip: several railway lines meet at Aulendorf station. As train services and timetables can change, check current connections before you travel.
