Water Tower and Architectural History
The historic water tower was handed over to the then municipality in 1907 by the company Stephan und Schneider, after a construction period of just under a year. At 47.6 metres, it remained Eppelheim’s tallest structure until the 1970s. Its brickwork, contrasting sandstone base and replica arcade define its architecture. The water reservoir held 220 cubic metres; its natural drop provided the necessary pressure in the local water pipes. A landmark of the town, the tower is a listed building and houses a room for civil weddings. In 2009, Germany’s first hare museum opened on the ground floor.
An older period of construction is represented by St Paul’s Church: its late Gothic tower portal dates from the 15th century and is Eppelheim’s oldest building section. The water tower and church portal thus mark different periods in the town’s architectural history.

For generations, Eppelheim’s Kerwe street festival has been celebrated on the first weekend in October. Tents and stalls offer food from the region and its partner towns. Another local tradition is the Sommertagszug (summer procession), which symbolically marks the final banishment of winter. It takes place on the second Sunday after Easter, proceeding from the town hall to the festival grounds in the car park of the Rhein-Neckar-Halle.
At Eppelheim’s Christmas Village, you can discover Christmas crafts and treats over two days. A crafts market takes place alongside the festivities on the forecourt of the Rudolf-Wild-Halle. On the stage in front of the hall, kindergartens, schools, associations and other performers put on a programme; individual items may vary.
Leisure at the Town Park, Skate Park and Swimming Pool
The town park has a lawn where you can picnic, as well as a play area with a pirate ship. This makes it easy to distinguish between a picnic spot and a specific play activity as two separate park features. If you are interested in skating, you’ll find a skate park with three ramps of varying heights and gradients at the Capri-Sonne sports centre. Check current on-site availability before visiting.
