Neckargemünd: Hiking Trails, Dilsberg and Half-Timbered Houses
Accommodation in Neckargemünd
Neckargemünd can be explored in many different ways: with interactive stations, trails focused on a natural theme, hiking and cycling routes, or historic sites. When planning, it is therefore worth looking at a trail’s theme and length rather than just its name. Two trails are each about 2.5 kilometers long, but have different focuses. The second stage of the Neckarsteig and a stage of the Neckartal Cycle Route offer different distances and activities. The city’s history is reflected not only in old houses, but also in buildings that have served different purposes over time.
Trails by Theme and Length
The Sinnenpfad has more than 17 interactive stations for adults and children and is easy to navigate with a stroller. The approximately 2.5-kilometer trail leads from the hiking parking area in Neckargemünd to the district of Waldhilsbach. The “Hochwasserpfad,” a geopark trail established in 2014, also runs for about 2.5 kilometers along the Neckar and Elsenz rivers; ten information boards explain the natural phenomenon of flooding. Although the trails are similar in length, they have different focuses: interaction defines the Sinnenpfad, while the Hochwasserpfad explains flooding.
If you are planning a longer hike, the second stage of the Neckarsteig connects Neckargemünd and Neckarsteinach. It is classified as a moderate 9-kilometer hike. It is considerably longer than the trails of about 2.5 kilometers, so check the route information before setting out. For a cycling trip, the Neckartal Cycle Route includes a 62.5-kilometer stage from Neckargemünd to Mosbach that follows the Neckar. This lets you compare hiking and cycling routes by activity and stated distance.
Dilsberg and Historic Buildings
The high-medieval Dilsberg hilltop fortress is the historic origin of the Dilsberg district in Neckargemünd. The stair tower in the ruins offers views over the Neckar Valley and the Odenwald. The fortress also includes an approximately 80-meter-long underground well shaft. Access may vary seasonally; check current access arrangements before your visit.
Neckargemünd’s old town, which is more than 1,000 years old, has well-preserved half-timbered houses, some dating from the 16th century. Another historic building in Neckargemünd now houses the museum and public library. It was first used as a Lutheran church and later served as the town hall until 1984. The church, town hall, museum and library thus represent different uses of the same building.
Guided Tours and Getting There
The Neckargemünd Cultural Association (Kulturverein Neckargemünd e.V.) offers guided tours of the Hochwasserpfad three to four times a year; dates may vary. For groups, the Neckargemünd Tourist Information offers themed tours in several languages, which can be booked for dates of your choice. The Tourist Information is centrally located in the old town. Check its location before your visit if needed.
Bus route 753 runs from Neckargemünd station to the “Dilsberg, Vor dem Tor” stop. The Neckargemünd Altstadt stop can be reached by S-Bahn on the Neckartalbahn from Heidelberg Central Station. Check current train and bus connections before travelling.
