Schriesheim combines winegrowing, cultural history and routes through the old town and the vineyards. When planning your stay, you can choose from several different experiences: explore art and local history, discover the landscape on a hike or plan your visit around a recurring festival. The following destinations highlight what makes Schriesheim special for your stay along the Bergstraße.

Art and Local History in Schriesheim

The Théo Kerg Museum showcases the work of Luxembourgish artist Théo Kerg (1909–1993). He worked as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and glass designer. The permanent exhibition spans three floors of a restored half-timbered building in the heart of the old town. A free audio guide complements the tour: it works in any internet browser and can be started at more than 20 stations marked with QR codes. Special exhibitions featuring renowned artists from Germany and abroad are also held twice a year. If you would like to see a special exhibition, check the dates before your visit.

Schriesheim also offers routes with a focus on history. Visitors can explore the city’s history along the Old Town Trail, using numerous information boards. The “Kuhberg” themed trail is a circular route of around three kilometres, with ten boards covering the city’s history and Strahlenburg Castle. The Old Town Trail presents local history through numerous boards; those along the roughly three-kilometre Kuhberg circular trail cover the city’s history and Strahlenburg Castle.

Mine Tour and Practical Travel Information

The Anna-Elisabeth Mine is a 500-year-old silver and vitriol mine in Schriesheim. A tour of around one hour takes you through the city’s underground world. Check the current visiting dates before making plans. The mine is directly accessible by public transport via the “Edelstein” bus stop; check routes and timetables separately.

Vineyards, Views and Hiking

Guided wine hikes in Schriesheim are around eight kilometres long and lead through the Kuhberg, Madonnenberg and Schlossberg vineyards. One wine hike also reaches a viewing platform below Strahlenburg Castle, where you can enjoy an unobstructed view across the Rhine plain. Strahlenburg Castle itself offers a particularly impressive view. Vine-covered slopes lie below and beside the castle, where outstanding wines can ripen. The hikes thus combine insights into the wine-growing landscape with views of the surrounding plain.

The local S4 “Steinbruchweg” circular hiking trail is 7.4 kilometres long. It follows the Steinbruchweg back to Strahlenburg Castle and then descends into town via Heidelberger Straße to the festival grounds. At around 7.4 kilometres, the S4 is similar in length to the guided wine hikes, which are around eight kilometres long. Its described route passes back down into town via Strahlenburg Castle; the wine hikes take you through the vineyards mentioned above.

Wine Festivals and Recurring Events

The Red Wine Hike takes place every year on the first Sunday in February. It starts at the historic town hall in the heart of the old town and follows a five-kilometre route. Along the way, a total of eight stations—most of them in the lower vineyards—serve red wines, red sparkling wine and mulled wine, as well as non-alcoholic drinks, children’s punch and coffee. The specific selection may vary, so check the details for the relevant date.

The annual Mathaisemarkt celebrates Schriesheim’s winegrowing tradition and is considered the region’s largest spring and wine festival. If you plan to attend a festival during your trip, check the dates in advance. That way, a museum visit, hike and event can be considered as different highlights of your stay without having to combine them into a single itinerary.
