Ilshofen: Castle Ruins, Countryside and Outdoor Pool
Accommodation in Ilshofen
Leofels Castle Ruins, the Protestant Church of St. Petronella and the Unteraspach outdoor pool offer different highlights for a stay in Ilshofen. The municipality also includes scenic landscapes and nature reserves. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether culture, hiking or a visit to the outdoor pool is your priority.
Castle Ruins and Culture
Leofels Castle Ruins date back to the Hohenstaufen era and were built around 1230. They are considered an important cultural monument and are freely accessible; check visiting conditions in advance. The ruins are also used for concerts, performances by local associations and the Leofels Castle Plays. The program may change. The amateur theater group Leofels Castle Plays has performed every summer since 1985. If you would like to include performances in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant season.
The Protestant Church of St. Petronella in Ilshofen is said to be the only church in Baden-Württemberg to bear this name. A joint exhibition was held in the parish barn. Performances by the Württemberg State Theatre Esslingen are also associated with Ilshofen; its program changes seasonally. For planning purposes, note the difference: the Leofels Castle Plays perform every summer, while the State Theatre's performances vary by season.
Countryside and Hiking Trails
The municipality encompasses the Kocher-Jagst Plains, the Hohenlohe-Hall Plain and a small part of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains. Nature reserves in the Ilshofen area include Ahorn-Lindenwald, Gipsbruch Kirchbühl and Unteres Bühlertal. Some protected areas also extend beyond the municipal boundaries into neighboring municipalities.
A hiking route descends into the deeply incised Schmerach Gorge. A signposted detour from a hiking route leads to the site of the former Klingenfels Castle. As trail conditions can change, check the current state of the route before setting out. The landscape names refer to larger natural regions, while Schmerach Gorge and Klingenfels are specific landmarks to help with hiking plans.
Outdoor Pool and Water Regulations
The Unteraspach outdoor pool has a 50-meter swimming pool and a water play area. There is ample parking directly at the facility. Check current opening hours when planning a visit to the outdoor pool.
Boating and canoeing on the Kocher, Jagst and Bühler rivers are subject to regulations to protect nature. Before planning a trip, check the water-level rules and seasonal restrictions. The checks therefore differ from those for the outdoor pool: there, opening hours are relevant; on the rivers, water levels and season matter.
