Discover Mönchweiler: Art, History and Nature Park
Accommodation in Mönchweiler
Mönchweiler is a state-recognised health resort in the Central Black Forest and lies within the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. The town is situated at the natural transition between the eastern Central Black Forest and the Southeastern Black Forest. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: would you like to explore the town centre’s art and history, or use Mönchweiler as a starting point for excursions to other regions?
Art and history in the town centre
Mönchweiler was first mentioned in 1258. The historically important road connecting the Baar region with Ortenau also ran through the town. A public art trail leads through the town centre and past bronze sculptures. Five sculptures by Martin Kirstein are considered the main attraction. The Monk sculpture has stood beside the town hall since the village festival in July 1999. Art exhibitions, including hobby exhibitions, have also been held in the village and at the town hall. The exhibition programme may vary; if you are planning to visit a particular exhibition, check the current dates in advance.
Nature park and excursions
The Southern Black Forest Nature Park offers around 8,500 kilometres of uniformly marked trails. Mönchweiler is also a starting point for excursions to the Black Forest, the Swabian Alb, Lake Constance, Switzerland and the Vosges. You can therefore focus your stay on the town itself or plan excursions to other landscapes.
In the wider destination of the Schwarzwald-Baar district, trails of very different lengths run through the region. At the oval Kirnbergsee lake in Bräunlingen-Unterbränd, a 2.5-kilometre circular trail goes around the lake and over the dam. The cross-border premium hiking trail WasserWeltenSteig offers a different scale: it is 109 kilometres long, runs entirely through the Schwarzwald-Baar district on the German side, and leads from Germany’s highest waterfalls in Triberg to the Rhine Falls near Neuhausen. Comparing the route lengths shows the difference between a short loop and a long-distance hiking trail.
