Hohentengen am Hochrhein lies in southern Germany, right on the Swiss border. The municipality includes the six districts of Hohentengen, Lienheim, Herdern, Bergöschingen, Günzgen and Stetten. Hiking trails, cycling, castle ruins, a view of the Rhine Valley, seasonal outdoor swimming pools and a wine festival offer different starting points for planning.

Hiking, Cycling and Views

The well-marked hiking trails in Hohentengen lead through vineyards, along the sculpture trail and through the forest to Bergöschingen. The different landscapes offer clues for choosing a hike based on its surroundings; check the local signs before setting out. Lienheimer Berg is a destination with views of the Rhine Valley and offers a different focus: here, the view is the main reason to visit. The “enjoy & bike” cycling network offers routes for cyclists.

There are detailed directions to the water-treading facility: From the center of Hohentengen, take Bergstraße to the local road between Hohentengen and Bergöschingen. Shortly after the first rest area at the pavilion, a forest path signed for the water-treading facility branches off to the right; the facility is about 200 meters further on, on the right. As route information may change on site, pay attention to the signs before setting out.

Castle, Cross-Border Connections and Chapel

The ruins of Weißwasserstelz Castle lie between Hohentengen and Lienheim, near Guggenmühle, and are surrounded by forest. A short footpath leads to the remains of the walls. The castle was built around the 11th century and originally belonged to Reichenau Abbey. Its location and history offer two different points of reference: Guggenmühle identifies where the ruins are, while the castle’s affiliation with the abbey indicates its historical origins.

There are also two named points of reference for exploring across the border. The sculpture trail connects the town of Kaiserstuhl and the municipality of Hohentengen across the national border. A bridge over the Rhine connects Hohentengen with the medieval town of Kaiserstuhl on the Swiss side. This lets you choose between a cultural trail and a bridge as two different kinds of connection.

St. Anthony’s Chapel is available for baptisms and weddings. If this is relevant to your trip, arrange the details locally.

Seasonal Attractions

The outdoor swimming pools in Hohentengen and Lienheim are open during the outdoor swimming season. The pool in Hohentengen has a slide and is considered a family destination. Check the current opening dates before planning a visit to the pool. The Hohentengen wine festival takes place in autumn on the second weekend of September; confirm the dates for the relevant year if you want to plan your trip around it. The two activities fall in different time windows: swimming is tied to the outdoor swimming season, while the wine festival takes place on a September weekend in autumn. This may help you choose when to travel if visiting a pool or attending the festival is important to you.
