Pilgrimage Church on Schönbühl

The Baroque pilgrimage church of Our Lady is located on Schönbühl in Todtmoos and is one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in southwestern Germany. Its significance beyond the region gives Todtmoos a distinct religious and cultural focus. If you are interested in Baroque churches or Marian pilgrimage, the church is a prominent point of reference when choosing a destination. It offers a different focus from the hiking trails, whose character is defined by ravines, waterfalls and route details.

Hiking Trails and Their Features

The well-marked Lebküchlerweg trail loops around Todtmoos, passing through ravines and by waterfalls. The Todtmoos branch of the Black Forest Association maintains its trail markers. Suitability notes are also important when choosing a trail: the Lebküchlerweg is not suitable for strollers, but children who are sure-footed can hike it. From Todtmoos Höfle, the Lebküchlerweg runs through the Rabenschlucht ravine to the Schwarzen Felsen, heading towards the Rudolf-Jordan-Hütte.

The Rabenschlucht can also be explored on foot with the whole family via small bridges; however, it is not suitable for strollers. For families planning a trip, the comparison highlights the differences: on the Lebküchlerweg, children need to be sure-footed, while the Rabenschlucht is all about exploring on foot together and crossing its small bridges.

Another trail highlight is the Spürnasenpfad, which starts in Todtmoos-Strick. It leads to a total of ten artistically carved wooden figures, as well as climbing areas and small playhouses. This sets it apart from the Lebküchlerweg, with its ravines and waterfalls: here, the focus is on figures, climbing areas and playhouses.

Hochkopf and Panoramic Views

Hochkopf is Todtmoos’s local mountain and reaches an elevation of 1,263 metres. The boundary between Todtmoos and Präg, a district of the town of Todtnau, runs along its ridge. The elevation and boundary provide two different points of reference for the mountain. When hiking up Hochkopf, an inversion weather pattern can make it possible to see across the Alps as far as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and over to Mont Blanc. Visibility of these peaks depends on inversion weather conditions. Compared with ravines and waterfalls as trail highlights, the panoramic views are therefore a weather-dependent feature to keep in mind when planning your trip.

A Local Specialty

Todtmoos gingerbread remains a local specialty to this day. So alongside the pilgrimage church and the different trail highlights, culinary traditions are another way to discover Todtmoos.
