Discover Waldshut-Tiengen
Accommodation in Waldshut-Tiengen
Waldshut-Tiengen combines historic urban spaces with museums, viewpoints and activities for exploring on foot, by bike or on the water. When choosing a hotel, it can help to first consider which of these activities you want to shape your stay: a stroll through the city, time in nature or a longer bike ride. The following places and routes offer concrete points of reference.
City tours and historic sites
Historic city tours, dramatic costumed tours and themed city walks each offer a different focus. Depending on the format and date, they may also take you into hidden corners and buildings that are not otherwise open to the public. If you have a particular type of tour in mind, check the current dates: formats and dates may vary.
Tiengen is home to the Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary. It was a late work by Vorarlberg Baroque master builder Peter Thumb and was built between 1753 and 1755. The lower part of the tower dates back to its Gothic predecessor. In Waldshut, the Upper Gate, also known as the Schaffhausen Gate, has foundations dating to the 13th century.
Museums and crafts in Tiengen and Waldshut
Tiengen Castle houses the Klettgau Museum, with a collection focused on local history. It includes archaeological finds from excavations in the Klettgau. A dedicated section, the “Jewish Room,” explores the history of Judaism in Tiengen. A visit to the museum offers a chance to see regional finds and learn about a specific chapter in the city’s history.
The Old Oil Mill in Tiengen also offers a glimpse into historic craftsmanship: its fittings are made entirely of wood, and the press frame dates from 1858. In Waldshut, the Old Metzig houses a local history museum that opens for special exhibitions. Since visits are tied to these exhibitions, check the relevant dates in advance.
Wildlife park, forest trail and views
At the Waldshut Wildlife Park, you can observe various species of deer, wild boar, ibex, mouflon, dwarf goats, owls, other birds and some small animals. Feed for some of the animals is available from vending machines. The animals on view and the feed available may vary. The wildlife park also has a large playground for children.
The Eibenwald Adventure Trail, established in 2019, runs near the wildlife park and around the yew forest. Along its 1.7 kilometers, stations provide information about local forests, tree species, forestry, wood and the role of dead trees in the cycle of life. Parking is available at the entrance. The trail can be reached on foot from Waldshut’s old town in about 45 minutes.
Another viewpoint is the Vitibuck Tower in Tiengen. Its viewing platform is 37 meters high and offers views of Tiengen and the surrounding area; on a clear day, the view extends over Küssaburg as far as the Alps. At the foot of the tower are a small hiking car park, a barbecue area and a children’s playground.
Compare cycling tours and a circular hike
The three Stadt.Wald.Fluss. cycling tours start at Waldshut train station and loop around Waldshut or Tiengen and through their respective districts. The routes range from 26 to 47 kilometers, with ascents and descents totaling between 500 and 1,000 meters. Most of the tours follow paved, forest and meadow paths, but they are not signposted throughout. As routes and signage may change, check the current route before setting off.
As a hiking option, the “Doppelpack” circular hike passes the old towns of Waldshut and Tiengen, the Vitibuck Tower, and the banks of the Wutach and Rhine. You can shorten the tour by using public transport or walk it in two sections. If you plan to take the shorter option, check the availability of connections before your hike. The two options therefore differ mainly in how you travel and in the stated route details: the cycling tours specify distance and elevation gain, while the “Doppelpack” offers the option of shortening the route or dividing it into stages.
Plan Rhine cruises
On certain days, the Rhine cruise ship runs hourly between the landing stages in Waldshut and Full in Switzerland. One- or two-hour round trips are available in the afternoon, and various dinner cruises can also be booked for the evening. Operating days and timetables may change. Check the current timetable and, if you are planning a dinner cruise, its availability before your visit.
