If you are looking for a hotel in Wutach and enjoy hiking, the Wutach Gorge can be a focus of your trip planning. Routes vary in length and duration; requirements for sure-footedness and seasonal conditions also play a role. First, consider whether you want to plan a single hike lasting several hours, extend it with another gorge, or take a longer long-distance hiking trail.

River, rock, and special habitats

In the Wutach Gorge, trails follow the clear river and pass rock formations. The gorge includes ravine forests and mountain beech forests, which provide a habitat for the rare Bechstein's bat and barbastelle bat. Endangered plant species, including the rare lady's slipper orchid, can be found in the highland meadows. Along a hiking route about 30 kilometers long, geological strata dating back several hundred million years are exposed. A hike thus brings landscape and natural history together, though this does not mean that all the trails have the same requirements or take the same amount of time.

Choose hikes by length and duration

A hike starting from Schattenmühle passes through the Wutach Gorge on the return leg and covers 12 kilometers, taking five hours. The length and duration may change due to local route changes. If you want to extend this hike, you can add a 1.2-kilometer trail through the Lothenbach Gorge. Another option is the Ewattingen-Sonnenrainweg-Wutachschlucht loop: it is 10 kilometers long, takes about 3.5 hours, and heads toward Wutachmühle. Details of this route may also change due to local modifications.

For a longer distance, the Schluchtensteig is another option. This 118-kilometer long-distance hiking trail runs from Stühlingen through the Wutach Gorge toward Lenzkirch and Schluchsee; conditions vary by season. The Wutach Gorge is therefore both part of a regional hiking trail and a setting for shorter tours. When planning your stay, it helps to compare the stated duration of your chosen hike with the actual trail conditions and the time of year you are traveling.

Trail conditions and other activities

The trails in the Wutach Gorge are narrow and uneven. Hiking requires fitness, sure-footedness, and a head for heights. The gorge is closed to hikers in winter. Cycling, mountain biking, and horseback riding are prohibited there; the trails are unsuitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Take these requirements into account when choosing your tour and travel dates, and check the current official trail information before setting out.

The FlowTrailWutach on the slopes of the Wutach Gorge offers a different activity. Trail features include jumps, steep turns, and bridges; there are also options for less experienced riders. It operates seasonally from April to October and is open in dry weather. Keep this seasonal condition in mind when planning.

Plan your journey and stay

Hiking buses connect the main access points to the Wutach Gorge; train connections are coordinated with services at Döggingen station. Since bus schedules vary by season, check them before your trip. This lets you coordinate your journey with your planned hiking starting point without assuming that the same connection works for every route. Choose your stay based on the activity that actually matters for your trip.
