Hesselberg: Ring Walls, Hiking Trails and Geology
Accommodation in Hesselberg
At Hesselberg, landscape, geological history and physical activity come together. On a walk around Osterwiese, the exceptionally well-preserved ring walls of Hesselberg are clearly visible; the site is considered one of the largest ring wall complexes in Europe. If you would like to connect your stay with a specific historic feature of the landscape, the ring walls provide a clear focal point for your walk.
Ring Walls and Geological History
The Geological Educational and Hiking Trail offers a different perspective. Information signs explain the Jurassic periods at Hesselberg in sequence: from the Lias (Black Jurassic) through the Dogger (Brown Jurassic) to the Malm (White Jurassic). The three terms arrange the geological topics in an easy-to-follow sequence. If you would like to explore the technical terms, you can understand them as a connected sequence within the Jurassic period, rather than viewing them only as individual names. The trail thus offers a distinct focus alongside the visible ring walls.
Choose Hiking Trails by Route
Route and starting point are the clear distinguishing features when planning a hike. Circular Hiking Trail 1 circles Hesselberg along a hiking trail approximately six kilometres long. The Hesselberg Trail starts in Gerolfingen at the large car park by the warehouse, opposite the “Zum Goldenen Löwen” inn, and leads over Hesselberg. This gives you the choice between a described circuit around the mountain and a trail that starts in Gerolfingen and leads over Hesselberg.
Cycling Around Hesselberg
The “Around Hesselberg” family cycling route offers a different kind of activity. The approximately 20-kilometre cycling circuit passes through gently rolling terrain, is considered easy and was officially opened in April 2014. Compared with the approximately six-kilometre circular hiking trail, the two routes differ in both activity and length: one is a cycling circuit, the other a hiking trail. The terrain and difficulty provide further specific guidance when choosing between hiking and cycling.
Landscape, Views and Paragliding
Hesselberg is a landscape conservation area. In particularly good weather, the view from Hesselberg extends as far as the Alps, approximately 150 kilometres away. There are two launch areas for paragliding, depending on wind conditions. The distant views and paragliding offer different points of interest: the Alpine panorama depends on particularly favourable weather, while the choice of launch area depends on wind conditions.
Gerolfingen: A Distinct Local Cultural Connection
In the wider travel destination of Gerolfingen, the Hesselberg Trail passes the Gerolfingen bathing pond. In the Gerolfingen district of Aufkirchen stands the clearly visible St. John’s Church, dating from 1514. Its furnishings include a Baroque altar and one of Bavaria’s oldest organs. These features of the church offer a distinct cultural perspective alongside the hiking and geology topics at Hesselberg; they are part of Gerolfingen’s regional context.
