Churches and local history in Allersberg

The Old Catholic Parish Church of All Saints is the oldest place of worship and also the oldest building in Allersberg. Its tower dates from the 12th century. The Romanesque church is surrounded by a fortification, most of which has been preserved. The Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary focuses on different aspects: this Baroque church houses one of the largest ceiling paintings in the Diocese of Eichstätt, depicting the Assumption of Mary. It is also the resting place of eight notable figures from Allersberg, including Sybilla Maurer, known as the “saviour of Allersberg’s wire-drawing industry.” Together, the two churches offer different perspectives on the town’s architectural and commemorative history.

The Baroque market square is also part of Allersberg’s history. Its historic buildings took shape during the town’s heyday, following the introduction of leonische Drahtzieherei (gold and silver wire-drawing) in the 18th century. The Gilardi exhibition in the former factory building explores the history of the Jacob Gilardi company and Sybilla Maurer, regarded as the “saviour of Allersberg’s wire-drawing industry.” One interactive activity focuses on Christmas decorations: visitors can decorate a virtual Christmas tree with decorations made in Allersberg. Check the exhibition’s current opening information before visiting.

The Allersberg Historical Trail has nine stops and offers insights into the town’s history. It provides a structured way to explore the area’s past; no specific duration is given. The traditional church fair is also a regular event in the annual calendar: it is always held on the last weekend in July. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific event dates.
