Discover Rödelsee: Wine, Hiking and History
Accommodation in Rödelsee
Rödelsee offers opportunities to explore hiking, wine and history. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the attractions: the Bildstockweg trail brings together wine and religion, the Jewish cemetery has a clear Saturday rule, and visits to the Elfleinshäusla are available to groups by appointment. The vineyards and the regularly held wine festival also add their own distinctive touches. This lets you choose the focus of your days deliberately, rather than trying to fit every theme into a single outing.
Walks and wine country
The digital “Wine and Truth” Bildstockweg trail has nine stations and is about three kilometres long. It explores the distinctive features of wine and religion in and around Rödelsee. This provides a themed route for anyone looking for more than just a description of the distance on a walk. Both the number of stations and the approximate length are useful for planning your day, while the themes give the route a clear focus.
The Traumrunde Rödelsee is a designated hiking trail. Nearby, the 474-metre-high Schwanberg, with its forests and vineyard-covered slopes, invites visitors to go for walks and hikes. These offer two distinct options: the Bildstockweg has a stated length and number of stations, while the Schwanberg is characterised by its forests and slopes.
Jewish history and architecture
The Jewish District Cemetery in Rödelsee covers just under 19,000 square metres and, with its 5,500 former graves, is one of the largest surviving Jewish cemeteries in Germany. It was first mentioned in 1432; until 1942, Jews from more than 20 communities were buried there. Around 2,500 gravestones remain, and their inscriptions can provide information about those buried there. The cemetery’s history and individual life stories can therefore be explored in different ways.
The day of the week matters when planning a visit: because of the Jewish Sabbath, the cemetery may not be entered on Saturdays, and no guided tours are available that day.
Crailsheim Castle in Rödelsee was built in 1614 with a volute gable and subsequently became the residence of the Rödelsee branch of the von Crailsheim family. The Elfleinshäusla also offers an insight into Franconian building and craft history: this faithfully restored home, business premises and vintner’s house has a forge as its central feature. Groups of up to 20 people can book a museum tour and, if available, a blacksmith demonstration by arrangement.
Wine in Rödelsee
The vineyards known as “Küchenmeister” and “Schwanleite” in Rödelsee offer especially favourable conditions for the grapes thanks to their special microclimate. The Vinfothek Schloss Crailsheim combines a tourist information centre with a wine shop. Wine tastings at “terroir f Silvaner” can be booked through the municipality. The Rödelsee Wine Festival is held regularly on the first weekend in July; check the specific event dates before your trip. The local wine experiences thus vary: they range from the conditions in the vineyards to a bookable tasting and the festival date.
Getting there and planning
The nearest train station is in Iphofen, about three kilometres from Rödelsee. Check current train services when planning your journey. If a particular attraction is the reason for your trip, take its conditions into account too: check the relevant dates for the wine festival, and note that tours at the Elfleinshäusla require advance booking.
