Abenberg: Castle, Bobbin Lace and Trails
Accommodation in Abenberg
Castle Museum, Bobbin Lace and Views
If you are looking for a hotel in Abenberg, its castle, craft traditions and trails through varied landscapes offer a first impression of what the area has to offer. Abenberg Castle is home to the Castle Museum and the Bobbin Lace Museum. The Castle Museum features an interactive exhibition on 1,000 years of the castle’s history. Bobbin lace has been part of Abenberg’s history for 400 years; the Bobbin Lace Museum displays lacework from Abenberg and elsewhere in Europe, including pieces made with gold and silver. The same castle is therefore home to two distinct cultural highlights: the castle’s long history and a craft whose exhibited examples reach beyond Abenberg.
The “Luginsland” observation tower at Abenberg Castle also offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Check the latest opening information before your museum visit.
Trails and Walks
The “Experience Abenberg’s Water” hiking trail starts in the town center, crosses fields, passes several ponds and goes through the forest; it then loops back to Klosterweiher, which is also the starting point.
Unlike this trail, which links different landscape sections with a return to Klosterweiher, you can explore the “From the Castle to the Town” circular route on your own or as part of a guided walk. If you are planning a guided tour, check the current options before your trip.
Getting There and Longer Routes
Abenberg lies on the Castle Road, an 840-kilometer themed route between Heidelberg/Schwetzingen and Bayreuth that links more than 40 places of interest. Bus route 605 (Roth–Abenberg–Spalt) departs from Roth station and is also known as the Brombachsee Express. Check the transport operator’s current timetable before travelling, as bus services may change.
More to Explore in the Roth Region
The wider Roth region offers other options with a range of themes. The KammerSTEINPILZpfad in Kammerstein is four kilometers long and has ten mushroom nests with quiz questions, as well as a playground along the trail. A much longer cycling route, “RH hoch 2,” circles the entire Roth district for more than 200 kilometers, following the district boundaries. Rothsee, covering 210 hectares, lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg.
The Rothsee Environmental Education Center offers year-round guided tours tailored to age and ability for school classes, kindergarten groups, people with disabilities and visitor groups. During school holidays and at weekends, there is an open program for children and families, who can also explore the center independently. Both the group and the date are therefore relevant when planning: guided tours are available year-round, while the open program for children and families runs during school holidays and at weekends. Check the current dates with the operator.
The wider Roth region is also home to DATEV Challenge Roth, a triathlon event held regularly in summer in the district. If the event is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates and participation details separately.
