Neusitz lies directly on the European Watershed Trail; the Franconian Water Cycle Route also passes through the village. Hiking and cycling are therefore two natural focuses when planning a trip. The Holy Cross Church adds art and history to the trail themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Neusitz, you can first decide whether you want your stay to focus on a hike, a cycling tour, or the history of the church and village.

Hiking on the European Watershed Trail

The European Watershed Trail runs for 98 kilometres from Ansbach to Schnelldorf, and Neusitz lies directly on the route. The trail has been awarded the “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” seal by the German Hiking Association. Its total length and endpoints provide a wider regional context for planning a hike; for a single loop, Neusitz has its own route and duration information for the W13.

The European Watershed Trail runs through Frankenhöhe Nature Park and repeatedly crosses points where water flows either into the Black Sea or the North Sea. The watershed therefore separates drainage directions leading to different seas. Above Neusitz, the trail climbs 100 metres in elevation in the Schlossberg area. Beech, oak and mixed forests accompany it along the edge of Frankenhöhe, near the watershed, heading south.

Circular Hike and Cycling Routes

The 22.7-kilometre W13 “Kirnberger Weg” circular hiking trail is designed to take 6.5 hours. It descends over Frankenhöhe to Neusitz and then continues back to the starting point. The distance and estimated time here refer to a specific circular hike. By contrast, the European Watershed Trail focuses on the full route from Ansbach to Schnelldorf—a useful distinction when planning a hike of a particular length.

There are different options to consider for cycling tours, too. The Franconian Water Cycle Route passes through Neusitz, goes by several ponds and then continues into the forest; it is a circular route through Franconia. The cycling routes around Neusitz also include the AltmĂĽhl Cycle Path between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Lake AltmĂĽhl. The cycling tour from Neusitz to Mohrenhof in Lauterbach is considered suitable for families. The Central Franconian Way of St. James between Nuremberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber is another hiking option nearby.

Holy Cross Church: Art and History

The altar of the Holy Cross Church in Neusitz features a crucifixion group from the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider. According to tradition, the church is older than all the churches in Rothenburg. It was probably initially associated with a castle; later, it served as the convent church of a Dominican nunnery. The attribution of the altar to Riemenschneider’s workshop and the traditional claim about the church’s age offer different points of interest in the history of art and the church.

Include Trails and Travel Connections in Your Tour Planning

The VGN bus stop in Wachsenberg, within the municipality of Neusitz, is directly on the European Watershed Trail. If you would like to include the stop in your plans, check the latest VGN timetable details in advance. This will help you take the connection into account when planning your hike.

The routes mentioned differ in type and scope; the W13 also has a stated duration.
