Schnelldorf combines Erlensee on the northern edge of the village with hiking trails and historical sites throughout the municipality. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the village of Schnelldorf and the other districts: the Igelweg starts at the town hall, while other trails lead to natural and cultural attractions in the municipality. This lets you focus your time on swimming, hiking, or local history, while taking the different starting points into account.

Erlensee and Outdoor Trails

Erlensee is a bathing lake in a forest clearing on the northern edge of the village. There is a large sunbathing lawn on the eastern shore. Swimming, barbecuing, playing, and fishing are leisure activities at the lake; swimming is at your own risk. Check the current conditions in advance if you are planning a specific activity.

The European Watershed Trail runs from Ansbach to Schnelldorf and is 97 kilometres long. In the municipality, the Ameisenweg and Salamanderweg offer much shorter routes: the Ameisenweg is 4.0 kilometres long, and the Salamanderweg 3.8 kilometres. The difference in length is 0.2 kilometres. The route descriptions are also useful when choosing: the Ameisenweg is well maintained and easy to walk; it is suitable for family outings with children and handcarts. The Salamanderweg follows well-maintained, family-friendly paths that are also suitable for pushchairs. Trail conditions may vary.

The Igelweg leads from the town hall via Sonnenstraße and the Old Sports Ground to St. Bonifatius Church. It also connects the village to long-distance hiking trails in the direction of Wildenholz. Some sections are not accessible to people with limited mobility. If you choose this route, take this limitation into account when planning.

Habitats and Traces of History

The Fischweg passes the Ampfrachsee nature reserve and its large habitat. A family hike with beautiful views of the Ampfrach Valley starts at the hiking car park at Ampfrachsee; it is not fully accessible to people with limited mobility. Clearly visible remains of sunken lanes have been preserved along the Salamanderweg, pointing to medieval transport routes. This connects the hike with a historical trace of travel and transport.

Other historical sites lie throughout the municipality. At Burgstall Wildenholz, an impressive defensive ditch reveals traces of a medieval fortification. In the centre of Oberampfrach, the former schoolhouse and former rectory are worth seeing. Unterampfrach has remains of a moated castle and a village mill. These places offer different points of interest: one features visible traces of a fortification, while others centre on historic buildings or the combination of a moated castle and a mill.

Church in Wildenholz

In Wildenholz, the church is open daily from May to October, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., for visits and quiet reflection. Pilgrims on the Way of St. James are welcome. As the opening hours are seasonal, check them before your trip.
