Weiltingen: Churches, local history and trails
Accommodation in Weiltingen
If you are looking for a destination with clear cultural and nature themes, Weiltingen offers several starting points: churches with different historical layers, a history trail with several themed routes, the Wörnitz Cycle Path through two districts and a recreational pond. Local history shapes the themes of the churches, museum and Spurensuche; the trails and pond offer a different focus, more closely tied to outdoor activities and relaxation.
Churches with different historical layers
St. Peter’s origins date back to the 9th century; the present building dates from 1280 onwards. The winged altarpiece from 1514 adds another precise time marker. The closed wings display panel paintings by the Nördlingen artist Hans Schäufelin. The church building and the altar thus represent different historical layers.
St. Leonhard was built in 1490 as a pilgrimage chapel with Gothic frescoes and was used as a cemetery chapel from 1621 onwards. Its changed use gives the church another historical role. Together with St. Peter’s, it offers a varied look at architectural history, sacred art and former functions.
Local history and traditional costumes at the museum
The Traditional Costume and Local History Museum is housed in the former tithe barn in Weiltingen. Its local history collection ranges from the Celtic hillfort through the Franconian knights’ castle to the residence of the Württemberg dukes. In the traditional costume room, the museum displays wedding, dance and church costumes from the Rococo and Biedermeier periods. The building thus brings together the development of the town and historical clothing as two different ways of exploring the past.
Exploring on foot and by bike
The “Spurensuche in Weiltingen” history trail follows the traces of local history throughout the municipality. It consists of a large circular route, with smaller themed trails branching off: the Limes Trail, the Burial Mounds Trail, the Baumhof and Hedgerow Trail, and a Springs Trail. At prominent points, information boards with text and pictures share facts about nature, culture and history. The named branches give the circular route different thematic focuses.
At Weiherweg, you can observe a stork’s nest on the disused chimney of a sawmill. This nature-based attraction complements the history themes of the trail. For cycling, the 107-kilometre Wörnitz Cycle Path offers another option: it passes through Weiltingen’s districts of Wörnitzhofen and Ruffenhofen. The routes therefore differ both in how you travel and in the areas they cover.
Recreational pond and event venue
In summer, Weiltingen’s recreational pond offers a place to cool off. Its facilities include a beach volleyball court, a tree-lined sunbathing lawn and a fire pit with a grill grate. This is a separate leisure option alongside the churches, museum and trails.
A section of the wall of the former castle complex also serves as an event venue: it was extensively renovated and opened in June 2016, can be used for events and has an integrated grandstand. The wall thus complements Weiltingen’s historical themes with a venue that can be used for events.
To help you decide on your trip, you can weigh up the different attractions: the churches and museum focus on history and culture; Spurensuche and the Wörnitz Cycle Path on trails and activity; and the pond on summer relaxation. This way, you can choose Weiltingen based on which of these aspects matters most for your stay.
