Explore Wipfeld through three distinct themes: historic sites in the village center, paths through the vineyards and views along the Main. Depending on whether you focus on local history, a walk through the vineyards or the river, your stay will have a different emphasis.

Local History on the Celtis Circular Trail

The Historic Celtis Circular Trail honors Conrad Celtis (1459–1508), considered Wipfeld’s most famous son and the first crowned German poet. Information boards at 22 stops provide details about historic buildings and events. The trail starts on Mainstraße, runs clockwise through the village and ends at St. Johannis Parish Church. A detour to the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail is possible. The route passes through Wipfeld’s lanes and by the Wipfeld Literature House, a literary museum and cultural center for the village. The circular trail thus brings both local history and the Literature House, a cultural stop, into focus.

Vineyards and the Zehntgrafen Arbor

The Zehntgrafen Wine Trail focuses on the landscape: this 3.3 km circular route leads through Wipfeld’s vineyards. Along the way is the Zehntgrafen Arbor, a rest stop maintained by the Wipfeld Winegrowing Association. Visitors can sample regional wines there. The renowned “Wipfelder Zehntgraf” vineyard site covers a good 85 hectares of vines. If you plan to sample wine at the Zehntgrafen Arbor, check availability in advance.

The trails offer different highlights: the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail is a measured circular route through the vineyards, while the Celtis Circular Trail focuses on its 22 stops and route through the lanes. You can choose between a walk through the vineyards and a tour focused on local history.

Churches and Historic Village Scenes

St. John the Baptist Parish Church was built in several stages. The Julius Echter Tower was built in 1599, followed by the choir in 1615. The Neoclassical nave was built between 1786 and 1790. The church furnishings also have their own history: the high altar is by Materno Bossi. The figures on the predella come from the former Heidenfeld Monastery and were created by Johann Peter Wagner.

St. Ludwig Monastery Church was built in the Beuron style and is an important testament to religious and cultural history. The village center also contains well-preserved ensembles. The historic village scene therefore includes not only individual church buildings but also other connected areas in the center.

The Main and the Landscape

By the Main is the Generations Square, which complements the large playground. From here, you can watch boats and observe the stork’s nest in the “Mainaue bei St. Ludwig” nature reserve. Another named viewpoint is the observation hill on Speiersberg: at 325 m above sea level, it is one of the highest points on the Mainschleife.

Wipfeld has cycling and hiking trails. The village is easily reached from the surrounding area via the Main Cycle Route and by Main ferry. If you plan to travel by ferry, check the timetable before setting off.

A Wine Village with Its Own Character

Wipfeld is a small, historic wine village on the Mainschleife and is considered one of the district’s most typical wine villages. The village has various wine festivals, seasonal wine taverns and wine bars. The wine theme therefore ranges from walks through the vineyards to local offerings. If you would like to include a wine festival in your stay, check the dates in advance.
