Großhartpenning: Church Art, Agricultural Technology and Cross-Country Skiing
Accommodation in Großhartpenning
Großhartpenning appeals to travelers with a range of interests: the Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary forms a clearly recognizable focal point in the village, the Hahnhof offers the chance to operate historic agricultural machinery, and designated cross-country skiing options are available in winter. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: church art and local history, a hands-on experience, or exercise on the trails. The distinctions below can help guide your choice.
Church Art and Local History
The Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary is a clearly recognizable focal point of Großhartpenning. Hartpenning was first documented in 795 and 804; the present church was built in the 15th century as a late Gothic tuff ashlar building. Inside is a well-preserved painting by Johann Baptist Zimmermann from 1746 depicting Saints Henry and Cunigunde.
The parish church also includes a chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Construction began in 1735; a circular central space was built on the east side of the church’s Gothic three-sided apse. On the way from Großhartpenning to Kleinhartpenning, St. Cosmas and Damian Chapel offers a view of the southern range of the Tegernsee Mountains. A relief of the Lamentation of Christ, probably dating from the early 16th century, is venerated in the chapel as a miraculous image.
The annual church concert at the Church of the Visitation of Mary is scheduled for November 8, 2026. Check the date again before your trip.
Experiences at the Hahnhof
During the “Drive a Combine Harvester” experience at the Hahnhof in Großhartpenning, participants operate a historic combine harvester across fields and meadows, experiencing 1960s technology firsthand. The Hahnhof also offers experiences and scything courses. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check dates and booking procedures in advance, as operational details may change.
Cross-Country Skiing to Suit Your Route Preferences
The “To Klein- and Großhartpenning” cross-country skiing route is designated as a moderately difficult circular tour and is considered family-friendly. The short loop of the Großhartpenning trail is also suitable for beginners. When choosing, you can take into account the stated difficulty level and the short loop’s beginner-friendly rating as separate points of reference. Seasonal conditions may affect usability; check them before setting out.
Holzkirchen as a Broader Travel Destination
The broader destination of Holzkirchen offers another hiking option: the Geo Educational Trail. It has 24 stations along two circular routes. The northern route is 16 kilometers long and starts and ends at Holzkirchen train station; the 19-kilometer southern route starts and ends at Herdergarten. The information boards cover glacial geomorphological phenomena in the Holzkirchen area, including retreat stages of the terminal moraines, former meltwater channels and the formation of the Teufelsgraben. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in their respective starting and ending points.
Holzkirchen is also home to a range of cultural offerings: KULTUR im Oberbräu brings together theater, literature, cabaret, music, concerts, cinema, exhibitions and food. The FoolsKino has 73 comfortable seats and a film selection that has won multiple awards. The FoolsTheater can accommodate up to 130 spectators. The foyer of KULTUR im Oberbräu is open to artists from the region for exhibitions; the rehearsal room offers a variety of participatory courses for young and old alike.
