Lathen combines a history of milling, a church whose history dates back to the Middle Ages, and a memorial site with an outdoor pool. If you are looking for hotels in Lathen, you can decide whether local history, swimming or a longer route should be the focus of your stay.

Culture and history in Lathen

Hilter Mill is a working historic building almost 200 years old. During a guided tour, millers explain the technology and tell the story of the mill. Check the arrangements for visits in advance. St. Vitus Church also offers a historical connection: its history dates back to the Middle Ages.

A separate place of remembrance is the official memorial to the victims of the Transrapid accident. It is located in Lathen beneath the track and not far from the Transrapid Visitor Centre. Two roughly hewn stones flank a metal plaque bearing 23 crosses. Its simple design clearly distinguishes this memorial from the historic buildings.

Outdoor pool and nearby destinations

The facilities at Lathen outdoor pool include a 25 Ă— 11-metre swimming pool with a maximum depth of 3.40 metres, a 1-metre diving board and a 3-metre diving tower. There is a separate pool with water jets for small children. As seasonal opening times may vary, check the current hours before your visit.

Nearby, in Lathen-Niederlangen, miniWELTEN displays a private Playmobil collection of around 3,000 figures across 280 square metres. This offers a very different exhibition theme alongside the historic buildings and outdoor pool. Visiting times may change; check the latest information if you are planning a visit specifically.

Routes of varying lengths

The 40-kilometre “Ross und Rad” circular route runs through the Lathen collective municipality and combines cycling and horse riding. It offers a different kind of plan from a single destination in town, focusing instead on a longer circular route. Check local conditions before riding.

Emsland: landscapes and longer routes

The wider Emsland travel destination also offers expansive landscapes and routes. HĂĽmmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometres in the northeast of the district of Emsland. Cycling and hiking trails cross the park, passing information stations, historic sites, megalithic tombs and Baroque Clemenswerth Palace. The routes thus combine nature and culture within the nature park.

One specific route is the Kranichpfad (Crane Trail): it runs for about 2.5 kilometres into Theikenmeer nature reserve; the return journey follows the same route, making the total walking distance approximately five kilometres. At the destination, an observation platform offers panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the Wehmer Dose moorland. An observation hut is located on the shore of the lake.

For a longer route, there is the 395-kilometre Emsland Route. This circular route passes through five landscapes: the Northern Ems Valley, HĂĽmmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. The route is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and free of motor traffic, making it particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. It connects 19 towns and villages in total. Any of the places in Emsland along the route can serve as a starting point and destination.

The regional cultural offerings also include the park at Clemenswerth Palace. It covers 42 hectares and includes the Gloriette, the garden pavilion of Elector Clemens August. Alongside routes through the nature park and moorland, this expansive historic park is another destination to choose from in the Emsland region.
