Bartenshagen-Parkentin combines woodland and pond landscapes, historic architectural styles and annual equestrian tournaments. If you are planning a hotel stay, these features can help you decide what you would like to focus on: the landscape, local history or a specific event date.

Forest, Ponds and Protected Landscapes

The Hütter Wohld is a large forest area that rises to 85 metres above sea level. The chain of ponds in the Wohld and the adjoining woodland areas were designated the Hütter Klosterteiche Nature Reserve by ordinance dated 1 November 2005. The pond system near Hütten comprises 14 interconnected bodies of water nestled among old beech and oak trees. Lake bei Hütten is a different type of landscape feature: it lies between Parkentin and Hütten, was formed by peat extraction and, at just under five hectares, is the largest lake in the municipality. Around 190 hectares of the municipal area are within the Kühlung Landscape Protection Area.

The natural landscape therefore includes a large forest, an interconnected pond system and a single lake formed by peat extraction. This distinction helps prevent the landscape from being reduced to just one body of water or one forest: the Hütter Wohld, the pond system near Hütten and the lake between Parkentin and Hütten each have their own characteristics.

Church, Low German Hall Houses and Craftsmanship

The Parkentin village church in Bartenshagen-Parkentin is a three-aisled Gothic brick church built after 1250. “Three-aisled” describes a layout with three naves; Gothic and brick refer to other aspects of its architecture. The church also features delicate wall and vault paintings dating from 1400. They were extensively restored around a hundred years ago.

The houses in Bartenshagen also give the local architectural heritage its own distinctive character: the village has an unusually large number of well-preserved Low German hall houses and farmsteads. This means that the range of architectural styles extends beyond the church to include the farmsteads. Hütten’s local history also includes a glassworks: it was mentioned in a document in 1268, and green forest glass was made there. The church, farmsteads and glassworks thus offer different insights into the history of architecture and craftsmanship.

Tournaments, Getting Around and Choosing a Hotel

The Rostock–Wismar railway line crosses the municipality in the district of Parkentin. Equestrian, show-jumping, eventing and driving tournaments are held in the municipality every year. These different disciplines make up a recurring focus of local events; specific tournament dates may vary. So if you want to plan your trip around a competition, check the dates. Unlike an event with a fixed date, the forest, ponds and architectural history are lasting themes to consider when planning your trip.

This is a practical distinction when looking for a hotel in Bartenshagen-Parkentin: do you want to visit for its natural and architectural heritage, or is your stay timed around a particular tournament? In the latter case, the event date should determine your travel period. If you are visiting outside a tournament, the landscape and local history can guide your choice of focus.

The Wider Rostock Destination

The wider Rostock destination extends beyond the forests and ponds of Bartenshagen-Parkentin. The Mecklenburg Baltic Sea Coast is one of the Rostock district’s main tourist regions. The Rostock region has 62 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline with a number of seaside resorts; the coastal hinterland also includes the river valleys of the Warnow and Recknitz. Buses and trains in the district operate as part of the regional transport network. With one ticket, holidaymakers can travel throughout the region, including to the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock.
