Mechernich offers cultural history and leisure activities as distinct highlights for a stay. The museum, a visible section of the aqueduct, circular routes and wildlife park each offer something different.

Mechernich

Roman history and rural life

The LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern – Rhineland Museum of Folklore – uses around 75 buildings to offer insights into rural life from the 15th to the 19th century. The buildings include farmhouses, windmills, workshops and village community buildings. Alongside agricultural buildings, visitors can see structures used for crafts and community life, illustrating different aspects of rural living.

The Eifel Aqueduct takes visitors back to a different era. It was probably built at the end of the first century AD, is one of the largest Roman structures north of the Alps, and runs for more than 25 kilometres through the Mechernich municipal area. A cross-section of the main aqueduct to Cologne can be viewed right beside the road “Am Römerkanal.” The long aqueduct and the visible cross-section offer two different ways to explore this Roman structure: one through its route across the municipal area, the other through a section visitors can see up close.

Village sights and events

Along with Mechernich, Kommern is the largest settlement in the municipality of Mechernich. Its historic centre is ideal for a stroll and includes the Rhineland’s largest continuous ensemble of half-timbered buildings, a castle dating from the 15th to the 18th century, a neo-Gothic church and numerous places to eat and drink. The half-timbered buildings, castle and church each add a distinct architectural feature to the village landscape. Separate access restrictions may apply to individual buildings.

The Old Church of St. John is a landmark of Mechernich. It stands high above the town and is visible from far away. Satzvey Castle offers a different focus: a variety of events are held there throughout the year, including a children’s summer theatre, a Witches’ Night, a murder mystery dinner and a Christmas celebration at the castle. Check the dates for your chosen event before visiting.

Circular routes and outdoor activities

The “Mechernicher 8” concept connects sights and leisure facilities via two circular routes that can be combined. When planning your visit, you can choose one route or join the two together. The option to combine them makes this a distinct way to bring several destinations together in one circular tour.

The Hochwildpark Kommern has spacious paths, rest areas and viewing platforms at the feeding stations. The platforms invite visitors to watch the animals at the feeding stations, while paths and rest areas accompany the walk. The park also has a large natural playground with a zip line, climbing frames and slides. This means the wildlife park offers several activities in one place: a walk, animal watching and a playground.

At the Eifeltor Adventure Park in Kommern, visitors can toboggan on a 680-metre track. The seasonal operating period runs from 1 April to 31 October. Before travelling, check whether the track is operating on the day of your visit.
